My 90 AWD Locked up on me while driving, i got it towed on a flatbed, when it came off the truck the wheels were moving again, probably because they were forced into motion as the flatbed dragged it up. While driving it 40 feet into the bay to put on the lift, it felt like something was holding the car back, like the ebrake was partly on or something, or the brakes were rubbing, when i put it on the lift i found out only the Front wheels were getting power when put in gear, even with the ebrake off and ar in neutral, the driveshaft would not turn by hand like it did before and spin all the wheels. My rear right wheel was very hard to turn and my rear left was really easy, so i investigated more to find out that my left rear axle was loose by the differential, come to find out the axle broke off inside the differential, so i have to replace the left rear axle of course, i took out the differential, and unbolted it from the driveshaft, but the driveshaft still wont turn by hand, so even with the driveshaft disconnected from the differential it wont turn by hand and wont turn with car running in gear? So besides my rear left axle being broke inside differential, what could be keeping my driveshaft from spinning? The trasfer Case or the Center Differential maybe? Thanks for the Help

Well these cars are notorious for the transfer case locking up. The gears inside the transfer case basically wear down the lubricant an then just lock up when you get over a certain speed. Fortunatly there is a recall on the product and if you take it to a Mitsubishi place they will check it out and if the transfer case is messed up they have to fix it. This same thing happened to me and I brought it down and even though they didn't want or like to do it they still had to. A new transfer case was put in my car and now it runs like a dream and never locks up.

Yeah I think what was mentioned is a good idea. you might be able to get it taken care of. I just talked to a mitsubishi dealership here in boise, and told them that I see leaks on bottom of my car. Dont know if it is coming from transfer case or because previous owner had the motor leaking pretty bad. told mitsu this and mentioned having it checked out and about the recall. service dept informed me that the recall is per vin number! he checked per mitubishi site and vine does not have any open recalls. is this right? or this a way to steer me away? is the recall on "all awd dsm's" including mine 91 gsx? thanks.

good luck on your differential, hopefully you can figure it out.

Well i opened up the transfer case to find the bearings were shot, they were mashed up against each other and wedged together so they locked up the transfer case, also there was a complete lack of fluid in the transfer case, it all leaked out without notice, my fault of course for not checking, i learned the hard way. But when the transfer case locked up and stoped the driveshaft, the left rear axle broke off inside the differential. the spider gears appear to be ok in the differential but i wont know until i get the piece of the axle out completely as it is wedged in there until i can get it out. So i will need a new Transfer case and left rear axle, where would be the best place to find one without paying rediculous dealership prices, i tried the classifieds on here yesterday but i think it was down, i will keep looking but if you guys know of a good place to get a good transfer case or rear axle please let me know! Thanks alot! Martin:talon:

well I guess I would try looking on possibly ebay or go to a junk yard and see if there are any cars that have a good transfer case in them

you will have to know how many splines are on your tranny output shaft to get the correct transfer case. I have 4 t-cases.
