If you don't put everything at TDC before removing the belt, how do you go about reinstalling everything without removing the head?
Turn the crank until the mark is 180 out, turn the cams to line the marks, then turn the crank to line them as well. Put belt back on.

- TONS of Tech Articles & VFAQ on this also...
Thats a bit to much. That brings #2&3 pistons into the danger zone. 90 degrees or less is all it takes just enough to get the pistons well clear of the valves.
But doesn't the vfaq assume that you lined everything up before removing the belt? Sorry for the stupid questions, but I've never messed with a timing belt before. I'm probably going to change mine this summer so I'm trying to learn all I can. I've read through your tech articles and the vfaq a few times but it's somewhat confusing for me without actually having the engine in front of me. I just don't understand how you can line all the marks up because you're not supposed to turn the crank without a timing belt attached.

I'm glad you read the Articles - now work on reading this Thread.

so maybe I am just confused on how putting everything to TDC before taking the belt off helps?
Reading through that article everything makes sense, so maybe I am just confused on how putting everything to TDC before taking the belt off helps?
