line up timeing marks?

Agreed! :) If you did not, there you basically have to start from scratch and line them up again anyway.
 
If you don't put everything at TDC before removing the belt, how do you go about reinstalling everything without removing the head?

Turn the crank until the mark is 180 out, turn the cams to line the marks, then turn the crank to line them as well. Put belt back on.

Thats a bit to much. That brings #2&3 pistons into the danger zone. 90 degrees or less is all it takes just enough to get the pistons well clear of the valves.:thumb:

But doesn't the vfaq assume that you lined everything up before removing the belt? Sorry for the stupid questions, but I've never messed with a timing belt before. I'm probably going to change mine this summer so I'm trying to learn all I can. I've read through your tech articles and the vfaq a few times but it's somewhat confusing for me without actually having the engine in front of me. I just don't understand how you can line all the marks up because you're not supposed to turn the crank without a timing belt attached.

DOH. You are right. You basically want all the pistons half way up the cylinders (90 not 180) so as not to make contact when turning the cams.

Well if you get it before the belt snapps or strips teeth it is as simple as aligning all the timing marks removing the tension off the tensinor and changing the belt. Yes there are a few more steps but until that time don't worry about it.:thumb:

But of course IF it's already JUMPED Time that will be impossible so just cut the T/Belt & jerk the Head.

I'm glad you read the Articles - now work on reading this Thread.

I read through that thread a few times. I don't think this is going to make total sense until I am physically working on it. :(

Is the crank the only thing you shouldn't turn when the timing belt is off?

IF by some MIRACLE the guy was actually doing Preventative Maintenance, & replacing a Timing Belt that had NOT jumped Time there would be some value in setting EVERYTHING to #1TDC before taking off the old Belt.
