Ok I have a 1g eclipse and the timing marks on the cams gears line up dead nuts in the middle of the center bolts on the cams.
On my 2g Talon they dont seem to be lining up when I place a ruler across the cam gears.
Can anyone tell me if the marks should be dead center across or not? I would think it would be as they are identical engines....HELP AHHHHH!

How many times has the head been machined?

Wendy

Whether or not it has been machined has nothing to do with the marks lining up at the head. The centerline of the cams don't change when the head is machined so they will still line up perfectly. It could change the alignment of the crank gear while having the cams lined up.

Anyway, they should line up perfectly on a 2g the same as they do on a 1g. The only real explanation to your misalignment would be that one can is a tooth off.

Are you trying to tell me machine is spelled (mechine)?? Now that YOU have been corrected. I didn't go into detail until I got a response because sometimes it leads to things being posted of topic. Or losing the actual topic all together. Side note...Its leading not leeding. :thumb:

92awddsm...If the crank is top dead center, and the head has be maxed out (machined) it can be affected. However, I'm not here to argue. Just speaking from experience.

Wendy

But without even speaking of the crank, you can still get the marks on the cam gears to line up which is what he was checking. Not alignment of all marks, just timing gears.

Well I assumed he wasn't doing just half of a timing job. I guess he could have the crank off, and have the timing marks line up, but what good would that do? ;)

I gather by his post that he isnt doing a timing job, he is just looking at them.

I did do the whole timing crank, oil and cams. But it is weird that with a ruler the cam gear marks do not line up perfectly all the way across.

It is not possible to have the wrong belt?

Its just that when all the marks are on and you take a ruler to check the timing marks the line...on the intake it is dead center with marks and center bolt but on the exhaust cam the line does not pass dead center..

Another thing...why would I not have a cas on my head. Does the 2g not have adjustable cas? That is the round piece on the passenger side of the head right?

On my 1g I have one on my exhaust cam side but the talon does not have one....??????

How far off is the exhaust cam? Is it possible that the belt is one tooth off on the exhaust cam?

The 2g has the cas located behind the intake cam gear and it is not adjustable. The 1g has the cas on the oppisite side of the head on the intake cam, not the exhaust cam.

It is possible to have the wrong belt, but very unlikely. If the belt had the wrong amount of teeth on it, you wouldnt be able to get three of the marks lined up and only have one that is off. As stated before by Wendy, if the head has been machined a fair amount, it would throw the marks off at the cams. But both cams would be off, not just one. I would redo it because it sounds as if you got the ex cam off one tooth.

I totally thought it was on a tooth as well. It seems to have a rough idle but the guy I bought it from also was externally dumping the bov incorrectly and the ecu was all jacked up. Spewing raw gas out of exhaust to rich.. I fixed that. But still seems alittle rough. Has plenty of power though. The guy I bought it from siad the head was rebuilt last year.
With the ruler across the middle mark seem to be about 2-3 cm off to dead center. WHen they are lined up perfect the line crosses low on the exhaust cam bolt about 2/3 on the bottom side..

I appreciate everyones help...

Nope.

They're not identical, and are far from it. But don't feel bad, I had the same question:

Opps I meant to say 2-3 Millimeters. sorry centimeter would be off a tooth for sure..
Thanks for the help...This site is an invaluable resource to the masses.

BTW before I started this thread the car failed emissions. Since I have remove the UIP and apexi bov and put the factory stuff back on because of the previous owner external dump. Also put the stock down pipe and cat back on. Went back and failed again...

I also redone the timing and it is still saying that cylinder 1 misfire...this was a problem at the first emissions test. I redone the timing. Which is questionable.

Possibly head overmilled out of specs?
Is there a good way to measure without taking the head off?

There is still a miss fire check my engine codes and it says that #1 misfire and ICS is bad...I will have to look into the ics I am not sure if that effect timing or not.
I replaced the spark plugs and it has some aftermarket 8.5mill cables.

Looking for troubleshooting steps to narrow this down..Also I check the spark and all plugs are firing. It seems to run alittle rough at idle and below 2500 rpms but after that it really kicks in the power and seems to run smooth..

I have not done a compression test yet...would a bent valve cause a misfire? I am leaning towards the head being out of spec but I need to know for sure.

Any suggestions? Please
