I understand there are several front mount intercoolers out there. VRSF are very popular, but appear to just be a relabeled ebay intercooler kit for around $200 ($300+ from VRSF and OUT OF STOCK). These look to require a lot of trimming and loss of factory fog lights, but large core, good cooling, etc.

Then the Strictly Performance kit, which looks just like ebay CXracing kits. From the reviews, these look to be less invasive, but not work as well, longer routing, and require more cutting for automatic cars.

I have a '96 Talon TSI auto, would like to retain fogs if possible and have limited cutting. Which kit is best for my needs? I have a stock turbo, but will have 14b or possibly 16g before intercooler install.

Same as vrsf if you can find one in stock. I would go with one of these 2 over a unknown eBay seller, http://vi.raptor.ebaydesc.com/ws/eB...2939&category=33742&pm=1&ds=0&t=1464943115444. There's ways to keep the fogs with these kits or get smaller fogs. Look into punishment racing fmic. Or if you got the funds ets! Also this has been beaten to death on this forum bro. Searching will get you all the answers you need. Also the car wasn't made for a fmic so plan on trimming some to make them fit. I have the vrsf and cx racing core and vibriant fmic. They all work just depends on the amount of work you want to do and what your looking for bro. ;)

I'd like to share I have fit a Hyperflow IC for an Evo 8 on the Talon. Fills the front grill beautifully and i retain stock fog lights due to how the IC couplers are angled for the Evo 8 and how it is mounted off the bumper brackets. These cores are around the same quality as ETS or AMS but found them relatively inexpenisve for how good they are over on evolutionm classifieds. Dimensions are 11.75" x 24" x 3.5" and is rated for 500+ hp and got it for less than just the VSRF core.

The fmic I have on my black 96 Tsi is a diy kit from eBay (RDT motoring). It's 7 inch and mounted to my crash bar with NO cutting of the bumper. I used the ETS 7" fmic mounting instructions.Although I removed my fogs there is still plenty of room if I want them. It's good quality, nice welds, I got the powder coated black one. The pipes are all beaded and the couplers are 4 ply silicone with t clamps.
I already had a greddy hard upper pipe which I attached this to with NO cutting. I only had to buy a 2" to 2.5" silicone elbow to attach to my j pipe.
You have to remember with an automatic many kits do not fit properly without modification, since the route of the upper pipe usually smashes into the tranny.

I know the treadstone TR8 core is pretty good fitment on a 2GB and its not OTT big and handles a good amout of power, it should be small enough to fit nicely in a talons bumper without any gaps or cutting and it might depending on how you mount it keep the factory fogs! I was able to on the 2GB eclipse but i wanted to ditch them anyway

^^^ Do you have pics? Also, was this done on an eclipse front bumper like your profile pic? If so that doesn't count as the Talon and Eclipse bumper are completely different with their fog light setups.
Do you have any more pics of yours? That looks really awesome.

It is on the Eclipse bumper so yes it doesn't count as the Talon. I'd imagine it would fit because the end tank couplers sit right below the fog lights but i have not tried. It could be too wide but Hyperflow is definitely a nice core. I believe they changed to XS Power now (maybe not) because those IC look exactly like the Hyperflow units.

The only kit that will fit on the front of the 2ga dsm with fog lights was the greddy small front mount kit. I would rather run an upgraded side mount than a front mount on a 2gA.

I had the larger fmic kit from Greddy on my old 95 GST (2ga bumper) and it fit well with the fog lights. The larger unit isnt even that much bigger than the smaller one surpringly.

I didn't read, but here's what I can tell you from personal experience. If you are going to run pump gas, buy the best intercooler you can afford. If your going to run E85, you can get by with a pretty cheap fmic. I have had a $59 cx racing core 8.5X20X3, and a giant FP 12 x 24 x 4, and now a Garret 12 x 24 x 3.5. The garrett cools the best by far. Last summer I had close to 200* ait on the CX racing at 35psi on the HE351. car trapped 130 like that. This year I'm on a bit Garret and have 15* above ambient temps at the end of a pass. I have trapped 133, but I did a bunch of other work too. I'd put the FMIC as a pretty low performance/dollar on E85.

As far as kits go, I have no idea on a 2g, but I didn't save a ton of money by doing my own fmic. I should have just bought the buschur kit. No way in hell I'd buy any kit for decent money if they won't tell you what brand the core is.

My final note on the subject: "There are 2 ways to do something, the cheapest way, and the best possible way, anything else is a waste of money". A well sized Garret or PTE core is the best. CX racing off ebay is the cheapest.

I appreciate the input. I'm at high altitude (4500 ft) and only have 91 octane. I plan to run 91 the majority of the time. Our nearest E85 is over an hour away. That being said, I wonder what the best cooling cheap core is? IE.. VSRF type vs CX Racing vs Other ebay cores.

How do you like the HE351? I've done sooo much Holset reading, it's getting jumbled. My original plan was to run a h1e in a .55 bolt on housing, but lots of concerns have been raised regarding backpressure, thrust bearing problems, etc... I might hold off. I'm stock auto/7 bolt with head studs, fresh gaskets, timing set, etc.

There's a front pic in my photo gallery; I just went out and took some drunken pics; the car is bug splattered and filthy btw

I run this with a small 16g works great. Very sturdy

For those that still have A/C, do the larger cores hinder it's performance? My car still has ice cold a/c and I'd like to keep it that way. How about rad cooling? Still on stock radiator and fans.

Do you have a link? I'm having a hard time finding anything that looks like it would work on my car, and pricing seems high?? $750+ new?

I found this core on the evolutionm classifieds from evolution guys upgrading to even better cores. It took me a couple of months to find it but i was originally going to buy a stock evo 8 ic core to put on the car. Surprisingly, it was only 50$ more than what the stock evo cores go for so i may have just been lucky but usually evo guys upgrade to the best stuff and get rid of their "crap" for somewhat cheaply. This core is definetly not crap as is a lot of other dsm compatible parts for evos so just hunt around over on evolutionm

Not sure if it would fit with fog lights or not, but I'm very impressed with my ETS intercooler. IAT went up 1 degree on the street during pulls in 98 degree weather. Went up 12 degrees after 6 pills back to back on the dyno with a 103 ambient. Very very nice intercooler.
