I'm in the process of ordering my winter stuff..And I'm just gonna get new gauges, and get a couple of them..

I'm partial to the auto meter ultralite gauges..I like the white face, but I also like the carbon ones..Everyone loves the carbon look..

What gauges do you guys like?

I'm getting a new boost gauge, and voltage gauge for sure..Going to delete the radio(I think) and mount the new gauges where the radio used to be..With a peice of black plastic..

Still havn't decided where I'm going to mount the boost gauge..You always gotta keep an eye on boost..

i prefer digital as it provides the fastest response and best accuracy since no spring to wear out.

there is a reason they use all digital gauges on high end sports cars

for example the lexus lfa can rev so fast that the mechanical tachometer couldnt keep up with the needle sweep.

I agree

Digital - very accurate when displaying quantitative data

Analog - Better for showing change over time

As far as showing change, if you have logging software then this idea is not needed as much. Logging software can show you the change over time better than and analog needle can.

I currently have 5 gauges in my car. Two in the vents, and three below my radio in a bezel. Boost, Oil Pressure, Wideband, Fuel Pressure, Coolant temp, Oil Temp.

I really dislike A pillar gauge pods, obviously this is personal preference, but I hate them protruding out of my A pillar, I rather have them at my display on my right, especially in a 1g, they are designed to be a like a cockpit of a fighter jet. All the paneling is slanted toward the driver. There is plenty of room for gauges without the A pillar pod.

Sure there is plenty of room over there, as long as your not a smoker, and don't use ac. The 2 center vents are the only ones that work worth a shit, and you loose the ability to aim them with the center vent holder.

And then in both my 1st gen dsms I had the radio bracket thing with a pocket for my smokes, lighter, cell phone. No big deal if its a track car, but in a daily or semi daily those things are a must.

I must say, as soon as I can I will get getting a cluster bezel for my 2g, too bad they don't make something similar for a 1g. I don't think they even make mickey mouse ears for the column any more.

Dont know about the dsm yet but in the 3000gt i would always hit the pillar pods with my hands when turning.

Good points, my 1g never had a pocket where the radio was. My car came with a radio/CD player which took up the entire radio bezel, or the two slots for radios/pockets. It would be nice for a place to put my cell phone....

As far as center vents, you do not loose the ability to aim it toward you, the vents are already on an angle toward you and with the right provisions, custom bezels you can angle toward anything.

Now that raises a good question..Mechanical(analog), or digital..

I have always had analog..Kinda..My old A/F gause was not mechanical, but it was also did not have numbers on it..It was one of those lean, stoich, rich gauges..The light went from yellow, to green to red I think..

Boost, I say Mechanical, look at youtube vids, they compare mech/elec in the same car, same manufacturer. MEch always looks like it gets the better and FASTER readings. Not even the $$$ stepper motor in a defi can keep up with its mech counter part.

The rest, digital. obviously. dont want oil/coolant/fuel/exhaust in the cabin :ohdamn:

The prosport o2 sounds like a winner for you. It has a volt meter built in. and does narrow band or wideband at the flick of a switch. you will eventually get tired of seeing volts every time you start the car, maybe, and you can turn that off too. and its only $60

And, if you are real sharp, you can find the code for rx7 owners and gen-coupe owners that warranys 5% or 10% off the total (i forget which) but that helped keep me under $100 for boost and o2. and the gauges match. I couldnt ask for more. also with each gauge, the lighting is flexible, you can either order it a certain way white or amber, or in the boost gauge case, set it to be one or the other or change when headlights come on.

ADD:

I couldnt find that vent peice anywheres. I miss the pocket option too... one day i will fab up a vent. Honestly i dont care about aiming it. as long as it flows in the center genera direction its ok. the cabin is small, and the heater/cooler is more than capable of changing the interior climate in a few minutes.

Besides... smokers like the defroster and floor vents more than panels, think about it. you dont want your car blowing your ash all over you, and you dont want it to blow smoke back at you...

I will argue that digital is faster than mechanical. How can an electrical signal that displays value be slower than a needle that needs to sweep across a gauge? Electricity = speed of light

Most pressure and temp gauges have independent sensors that install in the engine bay that run electrical lines to the gauge. Most of the time, you wouldn't even consider the fluids to enter you cabin, that is if the gauges/sensors are designed correctly.

I like the idea of having the boost gauge up high..

I don't want to put gauges in the center vent, even tho it is cool..I still have functional a/c..Even tho In the summer I usually drive with windows down and sunroof open..

Now as far as digital and analog..The oil pressure if I go that wau I think I would rather have digatal on that, just in case of a leak..

Boost gauge I think Is going to be mechanical..
Voltage is going to be mechanical..

I do wish they made a dual gauge pod for the bezel in a 1g, like they do 2g..

When I had two gauges on the pillar I don't remember hitting my hands on them..But maybe with 3 gauges you might..

So I might go bost gauge on the A pillar..And the rest of the gauges where the radio is supposed to go, on peice of black plastic..

I have a tripod on the pillar on my 1g. I have Prosport oilpressure prosport boost and aem anolog wideband. Setup works great for me. I love that My prosports are have a white light and the they turn amber when i turn my interior lights and headlights on.

I run 5 prosports peak and aem wbo2. With the exception of the boost gauge there are zero harmful chemicals or petroleum procts being put into the cab. As everything is electric. They look great and from a good friend that has the same they function remarkably. I'm in the same boat as far as location where to put them. I like the *new gauge vent cluster* looks sharp and a possibility for me.
