alright, i just need to know the name of a sensor. its a sensor on the exhaust, BUT NOT the O2 sensor. Fuel ______ Sensor. it does some fuel/air mixture deal...and its not the MAF. its on a 95 awd tsi. ANY IDEAS!?!? i forgot the name and i don't want to spend more money to get it diagnosed again. thanks

Anything regarding fuel/air mix will be an O2 sensor. If it is mounted in the exhaust pipe it is an O2. Perhaps you are refering to an EGT probe? That is usually mounted in the exhaust manifold. It reads the temperature which is related to the fuel/air mix.

If you are certain it's not the O2.. and according to you fuel ____ sensor, I am thinking fuel pressure. But that has nothing to do with the exhaust.

Can you give me a location of this mystery gizmo?

the guy at the shop pointed to the thing right in the front, right after the exhaust manifold. it has a long hose running away from it. i don't know if he knew what he was talking about or not....but he said it wasn't the O2 sensor cause i asked like 100 times to make sure. i don't think its the O2 sensor, but i don't know how much he knew. i wish i had written it all down, but it was simple to remember...except i can't....bah.

What you are describing sounds exactly like an oxygen sensor. However the hose you said it had is probably a wire sheath.

The only sensors after the exhaust manifold in the exhaust are o2 sensors. Could the long hose you saw been a protective sheath around the wiring of the front o2 sensor?

What we are talking about is the black wire that crosses the heat sheild. That is the main (bank 1) O2 sensor.

so it is the O2 sensor, cause the diagnosic thing said malfunction bank #1 and something about fuel. the guy must have just been a moron. the O2 sensor is well before the cat then...its right after the manifold? and it has a black tube, hose, wire going from it...its pretty long?

Yup, that is the O2. It is right on the elbow of the *ahem* O2 housing. They are around $80.. SOAK it in PB blaster the night before. If that doesn't work, warm up the car (get it nice and hot) and then try to take it out. I had the O2 housing out of the car and I STILL had problems getting the damn sensor out. You could also use a propane torch and heat the housing to a nice cherry red.

Oh, don't go to that shop anymore.

well they did the diagnosic for 20 bucks..which is 40 cheaper than a dealer...and i still eventually figured out it was the O2 sensor so its still really cheap. thank you all very much, i hope it fixes it.

the car is still stock, so its just hte sensor, unless their are other problems...which could be, but atleast if i replace the sensor i won't have to worry about it, and it will narrow down what the problem is, if it doesn't take care of it

Dont get these mixed up guys. I am a toyota tech and i know that there are two common exhaust sensors A/F sensors(air/fuel sensors) and O2 sensors(oxygen sensors). There is a big difference between the two dont get them confused because you will be just making the problem worse. most cars made today dont have O2 sensors they use a/f sensors. And some cars like toyotas have both. Im not positive what mitsubishi used in 95 though. Your best bet is to find a tech manual for your car and look it up.

Interesting distinction, but one without a difference. An O2 sensor by any other name still sniffs the same stink.

On DSMs, they're both O2 sensors. But we're lots cheaper than Toyotas.

wait they are BOTH O2 sensors? what do you mean by both. i was told their was only 1 sensor on the exhaust...right?

The second sensor is behind the cat. It's sole function is to check to make sure the cat works. If there is no difference in the exhaust gas post cat, the second sensor bitches and the car throws a code.

so it could be that sensor then? the diagnosic said. fuel trim malfunction bank #1. what would that be? and if i were to remove the cat...do i need to replace the sensor or can you just get rid of the 2nd one?

Bank 1 is the front one in the 02 housing.

Leave the second one there. Without a cat, you will most likely get a cel.

I don't agree.

An"air / fuel sensor" could describle a whole damned variety of things. O2 sensors, wideband A/F sensors, etc.

well i need specifics on what it is by monday....so if anyone wants to clear up which sensor it is...and how many there are and such, that would be very appreciated thanks.

alright good, thanks :) nice a clear and to the point... if all posts got direct answers like that so fast, you wouldn't have to read 8 pages to find the answer you needed.
