Leaky injector?

Ok, I've been having some hot start problems and gas mileage problems and some odd smells and I think they are related.

The car will die if I start it if it's been sitting 45-90 minutes. I can keep it alive by giving it gas for 15-20 seconds, then it settles back to a normal idle. Any more or less sitting and the car will start fine. Also, my car gets 16-17MPG, which seems rather inappropriate given I drive it really easy most of the time. Of a little more concern is the fuel odor in the oil 500 miles after an oil change.

My theory is I have a leaky injector that puddles fuel into the cylinder while the car is off. If it doesn't sit long, it doesn't leak enough to affect startup. If it sits too long the fuel seeps past the rings (my impression is the rings don't seal as well when the car is off, correct?) and into my oil, also not affecting startup but contaminating my oil. It could also explain poor economy from imprecise fueling.

When I pull the plugs, one of them smells of gas fairly strongly. Is there any way to test an injector or do I pretty much just have to replace them? Is my diagnosis even slightly plausible?

BTW, I checked compression to see if ring wear could be causing the fuel odor in the oil, but it's still well within the service limit.

Thanks! :)

A friend of mine had the exact same problem, and last week we found out it was a leaky injector. I noticed a smell and starting problem but i can't comment on the gas milage. Hey it's an excuse to get you some 550's ;)

An easy way to check would be to swap the suspect injector to another cylinder and see if that plug starts to exhibit the same symptoms. If so, you've confirmed your theory! :thumb:
