hey guys i bought a new car an my 96 rs was sitting for about a month started it up and it was fine. drove it to the new place and as soon as i hit the highway there was a horrible ticking... definatly in the engin bc it varies with rpm. i fugured it was valve tick or something. popped the hood and it was definatly coming from the motor. timing was good pulled the head and everything checks out. the timing tensioner seems like it wont come out from fully extended. thereare no marks on the pistons. the number 4 cylinder had tons of deposits on the plug and on the valves and cumbustion chamber. the plug also looked as if one of the prongs had been bent in. pistons move freely and the cylinder walls look great! even still have cross hatching. was thinking maybe it ws rod knock? any ideas? any way i can check if its rod knock without ripping apart the bottom/ putting it all back together. trying to be as cheap as possible because i am selling otherwise i would do a full rebuild:D THANKS!

Sure, check the oil for metal shavings.

A better way is to drop the oil pan and tap each rod cap with a hammer. Whichever one sounds unlike the rest is the culprit.
 
If you have ticking/knocking consistent with RPM, chances are you have a rod bearing spun. Most likely on it's way out.

Drop the pan, drop the oil pickup, check for shavings. You can also pull the rod caps and inspect, just keep everything in order.
