ya i did a compression test and found out that 1st and 4th cyls are bad put some oil down the cylinder and did a test found out my rings are gone. is that worth replacing?do u lose lots of power? and i still havent found the ticking noise yet grrrrrrrrrr :(

How much did the oil in the cylinder improve the compression?

A broken ring land may make noise. Rings may also not be the only problem. Either way, you have low compression so the head is going to have to come off regardless for the repair.

Pull the head off and take a gander.

Pull the head and inspect your cylinders/valvetrain

It is not any more work than you are needing to do anyways.

Yeah it's really low. after my first rebuild it was about 18-20, now I'm a little lower after the second rebuild, different pistons though.

nah my car idles at around 15-18. so if your rings are little gone on cyl 1,4 will u lose alot of power ### my mechanic told me i have to pull the whole motor out to put in new piston rings. my compression was 160,205,205,100

My car always idles between 15 and 18psi. That range is perfectly normal; especially for a rebuilt block.

While you don't have to pull the engine, you really should. You can pull the head, and push each piston through the top to re-ring it, but it's much easier to just pull the whole thing and work on it outside the car.

well im just debating if its worth it, i havent noticed any power lose and from doin the compression test its not tooo bad

As I say in any post, it is all your choice, all we can do is point you in the better direction. You can run it the way you have it now for free, or solve your problems now for >$200, or buy a new block after you destroy yours. That is just my .02.

ok well ripped everything out and apart and took a good look. well blew the piston rings apart and blew chunks off the edges of 2 of the pistons! like really bad! and that was making the ticking noise the piston iwalking back and fourth in the cylinder. my mechanic told me this was all caused by bad timing. ill try to get some pics its pretty crazy.im hoping i will be able to get them under warrenty? does anyone know how long it takes to break in new piston rings and what not?

It's all about preference. Some people have a 250 mile break in period while others have a 2500 mile break in period. Theres just too many different ways to do it.

so now that i almost messed up my whole motor by having 28psi and my timing all screwed up. when im done buidling it am i safe to run like 10 -15psi of boost and leave all my ignition and vlave timing to zero (stock)until i get it tuned on the dyno?

heres a video of whats happening, its only this noticeable when the car is cold, when it warms up i can just barely hear it inside the car in the 1000-2000 rpm range

I almost thought that this was cyrez's post.

That sound could be anything from the famous timing tick to a loose rod bolt (easily fixed from under the car). The best way to figure it out is, does it occur 24/7, under partial load/only while driving, or only while in neutral?

Try and be more specific, is it coming from the block or head?

I did my whole engine rebuild and I found out it was a timing tick, just a loud one.

Try and get more info, maybe a better sound clip with a steady idle than a steady hold at 2k rpm's and so on and so forth.
