I went to visit my father for two and a half weeks. I get back and of course the first thing I do is hook up the battery and turn her on. :( It starts up than dies. Not to worried yet so I start it back up and it started making a load knocking noise. Popped the hood to see if I could find out where it was coming from and couldn't cause its so load. I put my ear up the the valve cover (still was cold, I'm not that stupid) and didn't sound like it was coming from under there. I turned It off and let it sit. Cam back out after I unpacked and checked the oil. It was fine. Started her back up and still was there. I let it heat up and kinda went away. And I went out and it seemed fine all night.
I woke up today and was just going to cruise back road and got way away from home and bam. It started knocking worse than even quickly pulled off the road and popped the hood but before I got out it stopped.
It starts knocking randomly real bad and I still can't figure out where it is coming from.
What could have happened. She didn't sit long.
And yes before I left she was running fine, just throwing the rear O2 sensor. And still is, no other codes.

Drain your oil and run a magnet through the container. If theres metal shavings youre probably looking at a rebuild, if not, like backinajiffy said, it could be the harmonic balancer.

dang man... work on grammar.

Way to contribute.

^X2, change filters, and examine the old one, look for bad news.

I doubt the dampner is taking a shit.. Does it do it hot and cold? Only when load is on it? Have you been driving "spiritedly" and taking corners? You should be able to tell the area its coming from.. Se iff its coming from the bottom end, or the trans/engine interface..

Also, it may seem random, but dds are it does it more at a certain RPM, so listen and watch to see when it does it. Sounds bad..

Can you post a vid?

My brothers Civic started knocking because of the balancer. Evidently it had a chunk missing and it threw the whole thing out of whack.

Yea, thats nice, however, there are very few, if any documentd issues happening with our cast dampener.. bottom line is, IF it were the dampner, it would do it constantly, and would increase in noise with RPM, much like a rod bearing. Im guessing he has something going on in the bottom end., Im going to speculate spirited driving and taking a hard turn, and starving the bearings. Now it sat for 2 weeks, so it was a pretty hard start, and may have pushed the bearing over their threshold.. Just a theory at this point

Idk how many miles or on the engine cause it's not the original motor. And I can't drive it hard cause if I get close to 4 rpms it throws the powersteering belt and shreds it. And it's was due for an oil change it's about 4,000 miles.

You can tell from the video that the engine has not been taken care of well by the burnt on oil inside the head. Looks like the previous owner didn't like changing the oil.

Probably got crap all in that thing, clean that block and inspect other components, check the crank, for damage and go from there get you another crank or have the one you have cut, and grab some new bearings for your crank. Ive seen few people who dont maintain the engine and have problems, then needing a engine overhaul, learned my lessons in college with my first dsm.

there must of been something wrong with the harmonic balancer if your belt gets thrown off if you go over 4k i would guess that might cause something like a rod bearing to go out if your crank was off centered over time.

Its more then likely his acc tensioner is crap, causing the belt to shred.. the balancer is ###### not the issue as long as its on correctly.

Nothing wrong with the balancer. It's the power steering pulley is worpped.

It's the rod bearing on number 3.

So what all do I need besides rod bearings, main bearings, and get it turned?

Figure out WHY. Oil pump failuer? #3 Is usually the first to go. Youll deff need new rod bearings. Did you find any shavings in the pan/Filter? that will help detrimine how bad it spread the shavings. At the least it will needs to be polished, depending on how bad those grooves on the crank are, that will determine bearing size..GL, looks like bottom rebuild time for you. Now is where you need to figure out what your doing. Performance, or back to stock..

The oil pan was full of very tiny metal shavings. And what you mean what caused it. Do you think I have a bad oil pump. It was getting oil when we had the valve cover off. And right now just stock don't have any money.

bearing dont usually decide to just fall apart.. Im guessing oil pump, at this point, you should replace it anyway. But thats why i asked you how you drive it. Its possible you starved it of oil, which is more likely since #3 died.. Its not a race car, yet ppl rive them as such, they have a very bad oil slosh issue that starves them on hardRight turns..So that could be your reason..

Imo since its a sock rebuild:
Rebuild Bottom end , new bearings, crank polished or turned (machine shop will tell you), New water pump, oil pump, and timing Kit, eithe Hydro or mechanical. Mechanical would be nice, but not 100% nessacery. Then get the head checked/decked, a new HG, new head bolts and your good to go. CHave all the parts cleaned since youve pumped little shavings thruought the motor.

Yeah I know its not a race car. It's my dd so I have taken great care of it since I've owned it. A year ago I was ran half way off the road and it bottomed out the oil pan and put a big hole in it. I didn't stop to look cause I was late for work and a few miles later it started chattering real bad so I turned it off and coasted into a church parking lot and that's when I seen oil poring out from under the car. So I towed it home. I also run synthetic.
I turn left on to a road and that is when it started making the knocking sound and all before that was straight roads.

Do you think so. I don't know what all to do. Right now I just need the problem fixed. I have planned the beginning of next year to completely rebuild the motor and thar's when I will rake it completely apart.

Honestly, go buy a civic. They dont dies as easy and they are easy to maintain.

You really need a full rebuild and for it to be gone thru to get your moneys worth other wise, half assing it will only buy you time. How much time, 1K miles, maybe 20K , no one knows. Some will say to sant paper or use some method to DIY polish the crank and replace the bearings. Does this work, is it cheap? Yes.. but again, half assed and borrowed time. sorry, but the motors in a questionable state, esp from the prev owner. If you want to keep the car around, i recomend just doing a nice stock rebuild. That means having a machine shop look at it, mostlilkey grind down the crank, new bearing all around, new Timing componets, water and oil pump. Your Probably looking at 1k+ said and done. Thats why I said make up your mind about performance, beacuse you can do a performance build for more money, but atleast you wont be repeating effort and money. Your car, your call.

You could always find a running 420a that some one is selling and swap that in, at least then your in the same boat you were in befroe your bearings went.. Idk, options.
