Knock Sensor Wire Broken Question

Hi All,

I have a 91 Eagle Talon TSi AWD A/T. I got it about a month ago and have been rebuilding things and inspecting stuff. I found that my knock sensor wire was broken off. The sensor is still there and the plug side was attached to the main wire harness. The other end that goes to the sensor has broken off.

Can I just solder it back on? On the plug/harness side I see two wires. A red and a black. But the sensor side just has one wire? :confused: I pulled the sleeve off the harness side and can see that the black wire only goes about 1 inch or so down and then stops. There is heat shrink around the red and black wire at this joining area.

Is this normal or has someone messed with it. Also can it be ran with it disconnected? I know the 2G will retard the engine if it is disconnected I think. I would rather not get a whole new sensor.

Any suggestions?

It is a shielded wire, and it uses the shielding ground as the ground for the sensor. You will have to pull back the insulation, there will be a central wire with a exposed wire mesh around it. You will want to strip back atleast an inch and pull the mesh apart and twist it together into a single wire. Now strip just enough off the tip of the center wire to solder it. You will attach the red wire which is the signal to this wire, and heat shrink it. Than you can attach the shielding that you twisted together to the black wire on the harness.

Ok I stripped away the shielding on the sensor end and harness end so I could see what you were talking about.

I see the black wire is exposed after about an inch or so and it is connected to some fully exposed wire that wraps around the shielded red wire the rest of the length. It looks like they came together at the sensor end.

So Should I just twist the ends together at the sensor end and add a little solder. Re-shield the harness end and then solder the other end back to the sensor and plug it back it to the harness?

What do you have to work with on the end of the sensor? Is there enough wire left to solder to, or is it broken clean off at the sensor?

Umm it looks like there might be a crimp on the sensor where it use to be or was soldered to. There is no wire left on he sensor side tho. I'm gona go remove it so I can take a picture and work with it better. I'll post back.

OK well I need a new sensor LOL. I got mine out ok but when I was cleaning it the inner cylinder inside the larger outside one fell out. So The insulation stuff in there is kind a mix of rigid RTV like stuff and soft super sticky goo like stuff. It's just great...

So anyways is there anyway to trick the ECU to thinking everything is ok so it will not retard the engine if it is not connected? Or should I just get a new one?

Get a new one why not spend 80 bucks and get it fixed, rather than doing a half ass job. Since you said is sticky goo replace its a bad sensor already plus is 20 years old. Thats why our cars breakdown because we try to fix something that is already bad. :banghead: :notgood: :nono:

Yha I have found various things the previous owner(s) have "fixed".... I am getting a new one. I was planning on having it all done this weekend. Luckily I found a place that has one in stock locally so I can still get it done this weekend :)
