Ok well I just replaced my blown t-25, with another t-25, just for now till i can scrape together some funds for a evoIII 16G. Well the old one had blown seals so it leaked oil in the exhaust and made it smoke real bad. Well we got the new turbo on today and it still smokes, wtf? I was told that its probably still quite a bit of oil in the exhaust that needs to burn off with some driving. This normal?

white smoke, just like when the turbo was dumping oil into the exhaust. it does it usually after i get done boosting, i would assume cause the hotter exhaust gases are burning up the oil, also it sometimes does it at idle. Im starting to fear a headgasket but im not burning coolant, my last compression check came out 190 190 185 185. But still in the back of my mind im fearing the headgasket.

Blue smoke is oil. Black smoke is fuel. White smoke is coolant. When the smoke occurs, see what it smells like. You will know if it's anti freeze. If you find that it is anti freeze, pull the spark plugs and use a bore scope to look down the spark plug holes. If it's getting into the cylinders at the head gasket area, the piston with the water coming in will look like a freshly installed piston with no carbon. If all are black then it's coming in somewhere else. Is the turbo water cooled also?

Good Luck

Where did you get the T-25? If it's used, it could be in the same condition as your old one was in. Did you check for shaft play before installing it? If so, was there any?

Does it only smoke after boosting, or has it ever smoked after you have sat at idle for 5-10 min.

I got it off of a buddy of mine, just came off his car, was working perfectly on his car. no shaft play, defintely in better shape than my old one. It is usually after boosting but it also does it while at lights, driving while not boosting, etc, but its usually after i boost or get it into higher rpms. Is it just that maybe that since it gets hotter when it boosts its just burning off the excess oil? Cause a friend of mine blew his turbo and put a brand new one on and it did the same thing for a couple days till all the oil burned off.

Hey my friend had the same problem. His 14b went and he replaced it with a 16g(brand new). The car was still smoking for a couple of days. Looking at the compression results It doesnt look like the head gasket. Trust me you would know. It would smoke like hell. If you looked back while driving you wouldnt be able to see a thing OMG

I cant see anything :(, and it smells different than it did before, before it was probably a combination of the blown turbo and the headgasket, but now im really thinking its just the gasket. Im gonna take it to where i work and take it to the shop next door and have my buddy do a hydrocarbon(i think thats the word) test on the coolant to see if it is combustion gasses getting into the coolant.

I had the exact same problem a little bit ago, at idle a little whittish-blue smoke would come from under the car and after boost alot would come out behind my car and I noticed the accordian looking thing on the oil return line had a crack in it. Got a new oil return line and bam fixed it. Just my .02 cents.

To me it sounds like valve seals. Which would explain why your compression numbers are fine.

When valve seals go bad it generally smokes at idle. The seal around the valve stem gets hard, allowing oil to run down the valve and get into the combustion chamber where it gets burnt off, which of course produces the white smoke you're seeing.

If your compression numbers are fine, it probably isn't the headgasket.
If you replaced the turbo and still have the smoking, it probably isn't the turbo. When I replaced mine because it was smoking, I did burn alittle oil, but not for more than about 10 minutes. So I really don't think that's the case.

Valve seals really aren't that hard of a job, especially now since you can do the job with the head on the car. If you have mechanical experience you should be able to tackle it, and it should solve your problems.

When it smokes at idle, the longer you sit does it smoke more and more? Once you drive does it take maybe a minute for it to stop smoking? If so that would just be more stuff leading me to believe it's valve seals.

It smokes while driving, a lot at boost and after boost. it smells real funky, not like oil, more like coolant, my car starts to run hot, coolant goes into the overflow. Im pretty sure its the headgasket, im going to try some Bar's Headgasket Repair. that stuff in a silver bottle from advance auto that seals up headgaskets and such. Im hoping it will hold for a couple months till I can rebuild. Also when i drained my oil while replacing the turbo the oil looked a bit greenish, like some antifreeze was mixed in, and when i check my oil it seems kinda green on the towel. Back when i first got the car i used Restore, that stuff in the silver can thats supposed to help bring back engine compression and refurbish valve seals. Before i used that the compression numbers were, 185 185 178 150, a couple days of using the restore stuff the numbers went to 190 190 185 185 and have stayed as such for about a week. Im thinking that using the restore just kind of masked the low compression caused by a leaking headgasket. Sorry for the long story but i figured its best to give you guys the FULL story, so you have more to work with.

mines somehwat doing the same thing right now. A couple of weeks ago i cleaned the IC out and it was nothing but pure oil in it, there was oil even dripping from the uicp. Mine only smokes when im driving and getting on it pretty hard and then it stops when i return to normal driving. Does this sound like a turbo seal going bad? Also i've noticed hat when the turbo spools its a WHOLE lot louder than it was a while back.

Perform a leak down test, that will tell you if its rings, valves, or the head gasket. If you don't know how to perform one, looka' here!

A leak down test is not a compression test, don't let a shop get confused if you are having them do it... :thumb:

It will atleast let you KNOW what the problem is so if you are not doing the repairs yourself you can get a cost bill before letting someone take it and just make crap up whenever they feel like charging you - gotta love shops...
