I just rebuilt my center diff on my 95 gsx, now when I go to start the car, its in neutral, and let off the clutch it acts like it wants to take off? When I do put it in 1st it does take off, but then it is hard to get out of first gear, AND it dont want to go into reverse....OMG please help me decide what it is I forgot to do right! LOL Hopefully it is something simple. Car had NO shifting probelms before I took it apart to rebuild center diff, shifted fine into every gear, now this......any help or comments would be very helpful. Thanks

Whenever I hear about this type of thing its generally a problem with the clutch. I went though about 6-8 clutches from a company where they were machined wrong and the clearances made it very difficult to get in gear and the car wanted to go in neutral just like your talking about. I found that the trans shifed fine when the car was not running but as soon as the engine was running it was a different story.

Did you put in a new clutch and have your flywheel machined? Was the step and everything done properly for sure?

that is the odd thing, it is always what I have heard too, but the clutch has maybe 3000 miles on it and was put in months ago, I didnt even TOUCH the clutch to fix my center diff ( I didnt take my tranny out to do it, did it all just like on vfaq) and it still does it. The clutch would be my first guess to, but the fact that it was perfectly fine before I messed with the center diff and not touching the clutch at all gives me evidence that it is something that my goofy self has put back in wrong. It is really throwing me for a loop here....

UPDATE: Just went to check the car out again, and the car does NOT shift fine when NOT running, currently it is stuck in first gear. If that helps anything.

It sounds like the trans was not assembled correctly then. If it was the clutch then it would shift fine when the car is off but not when it's running.

Your gonna have to pull the trans again my friend...

I am not sure about on a AWD.. but do you have to remove the 3 spring loaded balls.. if so did you put them back in.. also did you get 5th gear back together right>?

Did you look closely at the 5th gear hub and slider when you did the work? It looks symmetrical, but it's not. You may have put it on backwards.

check your chift linkage. one came into the shop had the same problem and the shift linkage had came unbolted
