hi guys, im new to the dsm world...i just bought a 1995 GS-X AWD Eclipse and was a little excited in the beginning but after reading about the "Crankshaft Walk" problem that these cars are prone to, i feel like i wasted my money. i just got my car checked and a dsm mechanic advised that my car is ok but he's saying that these year model are more prone to crankwalk! i just wanted a quick car but not really to race..just something quick! and i cannot put more money onto the car if it ends up needing more repairs with a crankwalk.

damn! now i'm posting the car for sale..ill probably get a Non-turbo or a different car.

i have read a lot of articles about Crank Walk and majority of them were heavily modded but also some of them were just stock and still had crankwalk. i have been reading theses articles for over a week now and it just scares the hell out of me since i dont have much funds if this problem occurs.

do you think its best for me to just sell the car? any advise will be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

Im quessing you got some miles on your car and if it doesnt have signs of crankwalk you will be ok. Plus less than 30% of 7 bolts have been reported to crankwalk. I would keep the car because you will love it when you start to mod her up. If you do get crankwalk just swap a 6 bolt block and your good to go. Also dont buy a non turbo dsm, they are nothing compared to a turbo.

man, it has almost 130k on it..

i just spent 1k for the major service (timing belt, tensioner, water pump, stage 3 clutch, fidanza lightened flywheel, and it was bucking when i got it but now fixed).

i love the car man! and it definitely pulls, my friend even thinks its a t28 on it instead of stock but i cannot tell since this is my first turbo car and im dumb founded on turbos...

Your friend is right it is a t28. But the t28 came stock on the 2g's. The 1g 14b is a way better turbo. Your turbo is good for about 12-14psi, after that the turbo starts pushing hot air. Since you have such high miles and still have no crankwalk, most likely you will not get it. I have a couple of friends with 7 bolts and only 1 out of about 8 had crankwalk. You should be ok.

Wrong. He has a T25. T28 is an upgraded turbo similer to a big 16g. It using the same housing, so it apears stock.

1g's use 14b's, 2g's use T25's.

And t25's are good for 16 psi until they start blowing hot air....but the problem is that they cant hold it until redline. The rpm will just drop before you get to 6k.

thanks guys, right now i've already cashed out close to 5.5k with everything including the car and services (timing belt, clutch, etc...)...im just having a guilt feeling that i could have gotten something better with my 5.5k.

was i ripped off? car was 4k and services and misc stuff came out to almost 1.5k

Well most places will charge about 600-800 for a timing belt job, but you did the right thing in spending the money now to get that stuff done. There are some people who dont and have to pay three times as much to get it fixed. Proper maintenance is always worth it in the end. You might want to pick up a haynes repair manual so that you can do some simple stuff your self, save a little scratch. You have nothing to regret, and if you do you will so leave that behind you, i promise

I was the exact same way when I first bought my DSM... the thought of crankwalk scared the crap out of me! However, I've come to find that its not worth worrying about. God forbid it ever happen, but if it does just swap in a 6 bolt and you are done.

Yes, you are driving around with the chance that your DSM might walk. Thats a small price to pay for having a fun and cheap dd. IMHO, its much better than driving around in a slow but reliable car. Just my $0.02... Best of luck with the decision! :thumb:

P.S. I see you already doing the needed maintenance to ensure yourself a more reliable car. My advice is to keep this up, as it really is the key to a healthy and happy DSM.

thanks guys...really makes me feel a lot better about the car...

btw, I believe i got a good deal for the services i got for the car...its just the freakin CW that bothers me..but yeah, if it ever happens...it happens...i dont want to feel bad about my new toy...it's what i wanted..now that i got it, il improve it!

you guys are awesome!

Yea the day before I got my DSM I found the CW articles. Boy was I worried. I thought I just wasted a bunch of money on a car that will just eventually shit out on me. Well I started reading everywhere and the percentile of CW is pretty low. My DSM now has 140,000 miles on it, had the stock T25 pushing 15psi for over a year and still no CW. I am not worried about it. If it does happen...like everyone else said...6 bolt it is!

how much in estimate are we looking at to put in a 6bolt block? block and labor?? just in case it does happen

Hafl up to the cost of the car if you can't do work yourself. Let me get this straight, you purchased a stock 2G because it was "quick"? Even when I first started with cars nothing that ran 15's, high 14's was considered quick. They are great platforms and repsond well to mods but a stock DSM is not fast by modern standards. Hell the new Rav4 is running 13's and it's a cute ute. Crankwalk is overrated, my car ran 12's on a "walking" motor.

Just forget you ever heard about crank walk and just have fun with the car man. Mines got 173xxx miles on it, personally I think the 95's were the strongest.

Don't worry about crap that hasn't happened. Just come here, learn, mod, and soon whenever something goes wrong it'll be nothing more than just a pain in the ass because you'd have acquired enough knowledge to do everything yourself. Remember, if anything goes wrong and you decide you want to do it yourself, we're here for you.

A meteor could fall out of the sky and crush your car right now, a crazy clown could steal your rims or a group of ninjas could slash your tires..........ok, obviously none of that will ever happen, but the point is, why worry about something that hasn't happened?

Just take care of your car and have fun.
