Just like the title says. My TOB was making the typical TOB noise for a while. My second gear synchro was out also so i waited until i could get a good trans to replace the TOB. Last week I threw in a good trans along with a brand new oem tob and clip. Its still making the same noise though. Sounds exactly like a bad tob and goes away when I press in the clutch. So what sounds like a bad TOB but isnt?

Will that sound go away when the clutch is pressed in also?

Also, clutch is only about 6 months old. Stage 2 performance

If it grinds when you push in the clutch pedal only, the clip is on wrong. I had this happen to me when my dad installed the tob clip. Like said above too, a spring broken in a clutch can do it as well.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. When the pedal is pressed lots of things that were slack are now tight, so definitely things, sounds, etc can change.

So the TOB isn't supposed to always be riding against the pressure plate?

I mean just resting on the pressure plate?

I had similar issues with my tob. I had a new oem TOB shimed and it was making this scraping rattling noise while idling but no noise when the clutch is pressed. I had replace it with another new oem TOB and unshim it and it was gone. I'd make sure your fork is in the middle and not effected first, check your slave travel and inspect your clip on the TOB. Hope this helps a little.

I had my clutch fork hitting my pressure plate. Took out a shim and then it was fine. Just remove the rubber cover and see if it hits the highest point on the pressure plate
.

I agree. How worn is the clutch? I ask this because as the clutch wears, the fingers on the pressure plate start to stick further out (away from the engine, toward the transmission). Add an overly shimmed pivot ball to the mix and you could likely get fork and pressure plate finger contact.

I don't agree with this, mainly because my clip was on backwards for the longest time and I didn't suffer that problem. There was no difference in engagement/noise regardless of orientation. I just switched it around because I wanted to put it on correctly.

There will always be a small amount of force exhibited by the slave cylinder pushing the rod into the fork causing the TOB to rest against the pressure plate. The spring inside the slave cylinder is compressed when you install the slave and the pushrod.
Also, there's the small amount of force exerted by the fluid by gravity as it drops from the master nut that's pretty inconsequential considering.

Well at first, mine was just fine too and after 2-3 drives it started grinding. Once the clip was placed on right, it never happened after that. I had found a lot on the internet that said it does matter how the clip goes on though.
