Hi, I'm looking at buying some new bearings pistons and a gasket for my block (98 GST) and had a few questions. I've read there that there is no such thing as JDM eclipses, but I still see parts listed for the 4g63T motor as JDM, and I've read that the only difference between the JDM engine and USDM 4g63T is something about the intake manifold (this would imply that they're two different engines?). The thing I mostly want to know is if I can buy JDM pistons/bearings/head gasket and have it work for my eclipse (which to my knowledge is a regular non-jdm eclipse), in particular this set off of ebay right here

JDM Mitsubishi DSM 2G 4G63T Engine Kit Turbo Bearings - eBay (item 160554135454 end time Aug-30-11 04:04:13 PDT)

I'm hoping this will work just fine for me?

Yes you can buy this kit for your eclipse. The only difference in a JDM engine is the intake manifold and a few other things but this shouldn't be an issue for you as all the gaskets match for a US spec engine. Are you buying this kit for a daily driver rebuild or looking to get more out of the 4363T? Make sure you mention to the seller that you have a 98 4G63 and that you require the thrust washers and the 98-99 main bearing kit. Also for the pistons, make sure you get your bore measured to order the correct size.

"Nippon Racing" may be a knock off ebay brand. Check out this thread for further discussion on that topic. To answer your questions though, they use the term "JDM" to advertise and entice folks that don't know any better into thinking that it is some superior product. Yes, that kit will fit your engine.

What are your goals/budget first of all? If it is going to be a stock rebuild then look into NPR pistons and ACL Aluglide bearings. If you are looking into making a lot of power look into a nice set of forged pistons like Wisecos and ACL Race bearings. For either build an OEM or Fel-Pro composite head gasket should be fine unless you are having both the block and head mating surfaces refinished, then you can consider a MLS gasket for a high horsepower build.

To be honest, I'm just trying to put together a decent running (daily driver) eclipse with a bit more umph behind it than a regular stock gst. I bought the car as a project car. The car had bad compression, and was blowing smoke pretty badly. So I was looking at replacing the piston rings in order to fix it, and well since I'm already getting into the block I figured I might as well replace the bearings (the engine has 102k miles on it). I took the block to a local shop down here that does machine work, the guy said my pistons looked good at first glance and that the honeycombing on my cylinders was still good, but that he wouldnt know everything for sure until he'd get the chance to really look at it. To get the head and the block resurfaced will cost me a few hundred, and I was going to get that anyway so I dont mind getting the mls gasket. The guy at the shop said to get all the machine work done would cost me anywhere from 5-800 or so (assuming I take apart the block and put it all back together, otherwise its another 500 - _ -). I was hoping I'd be able to fix everything for about 1500, so when I saw that package on ebay I was thinking Jesus himself must have directed me to it haha. Maybe I'm being a bit to optimistic?

Your car is a domestic bro. We don't have any "JDM" upgrades beyond say Evo 3 Parts, and Cyclone Manifolds. Even then, it is usually more cost effective to go a different route. If had not gotten my e3 manifold and e3 housing locally, for 50$ picked up I wouldn't have even gone that route.

As for that kit. Just no. Do it right the first time.

OEM or Better Rods/Pistons/Crank.
Felpro, Oem, or Cometic Gasket kit.
ENGNBLDR, or Better Valvetrain.
Gates Or OEM Water Pump
OEM Oil Pump
Gates, or Better T-Belt
OEM T-Belt Components
Sealed Power or Better Main and Rod Bearings
ARP Headbolts

If your pistons are fine to reuse, I would redirect that money to just getting some new piston rings, ACL main bearings, felpro head gasket kit, GMB water pump and OEM timing belt and components and ARP head studs.
