Looks like the rubber surround for the cv boot broke. If this is the case, I would go ahead and replace the entire half-shaft. It shouldn't cost any more than around $150 to get fixed by a mechanic.

$59 at autozone after the core return

if its the passengers side, it's easy to replace.

the Drivers side is another story.

Looks like your CV joint, they are quite easy to replace. I did it in about 2 hours. And you can probably do a trade/swap because some places rebuild them. It only cost me about 40-50$

this is a picture of behind the passenger side front wheel

So this is not under re-call :(
What exactly are the lower arm ball-joints? where are they?

i don't think that's the cv joint
i got this from a friend i plan to replace it, i'll take it to a mechanic and see what's the problem.

That is just the boot replacment kit. If you already have that, then just install that. It may be worthwhile to replace the whole half-shaft instead of just buying the boot kit if they ever fail again.

This just happens when the rubber begins to dry out and crack. Eventually it breaks, I doubt that there was ever anything the manufacturer could do to prevent it from breaking. I've had to replace both of mine, so it's not an uncommon problem probably with any front-wheel drive car.

Yup, It's your power steering rack (unless you swapped to a manual rack but I doubt that). It's your tie rod sleeve, which means you will have to take out the WHOLE steering rack, unhook lines, ect. Basically it's a PITA if you don't have a lift...

*You know your car has been repainted right? That's a lot of overspray...

ok so it's the tie-rod, what do i do?
replace the boot or what?

Yeah i noticed the overspray, the guy who painted my car sucked but got it done :)

Yes, you need to replace the tie rod boot. You could try to replace it with the steering rack on the car (IDK if this will work, I have replaced other steering racks but not on a 2G), but more than likely you will have to take the whole rack out. Here is a rough outline of what basically will need to be done:

Disasemble -
*Remove front wheel/tires
*Tie rod from steering knuckle
*Drain PS pump and disconnect lines
*Remove PS rack
*Inspect steering rack for damage, repalce boot...

Hope that helps...

dang!
I hear a clank sound from that side of the car when i turn, is that it?
Will i have to replace what then??

My steering also doesn't come back to position could that be it too??

The component that is under recall is the lower lateral ball joints where the boot can prematurely wear, contaminates can get in and damage the joint.

Usually there is no symptoms at all....and your car will drop to one side unexpectedly...however when my ball joint went out there were symptoms...

If I would drive the car in say in 3rd gear, press the throttle it would not make any weird noises, but if I released the throttle and kept it in gear I'd hear a loud popping noise from the affected side and the vehicle would bounce.

I may be stupid here but what do you mean by an auto rack??? does that mean power??

There is no difference in the power racks between auto trans and man trans. In fact, the power racks used in the AWD and the FWD are interchangeable, from 90-94. I have yet to run into a difference in 95-98. This is just FIY from my daily dealings with power steering.:thumb:
