is this supposed to come out?

The output shaft on the transmission will pull out if the retaining ball was not put back in when it was apart. It doesnt really cause any harm. To fix this issue, pull the end cover off of the transmission. Remove the viscous coupler and insert a new small ball bearing. Put everything back together and you should no longer be able to pull the shaft out. Check VFAQ.com for detailed instructions.

you got a small ball bearinig loose inside the transmission now. If your lucky when you pull the end cover it'll be there.

So is it ok, or should it be fixed?
yep it's not on VFAQ
im in the middle of reading through threads about this, so it will wear out if it moves like that?
How long do you guys think it will last?

Yea its very easy to do. Just gotta drain the trans...pull of the 5th gear cover remove the Viscous coupler and install the ball. If you cant find the little detent ball I believe it was like $2 when I bought it from mitsu. And dont be fooled there is spots for 2 balls but it only came with one from the factory

Don't run that trans at all until you find that ball detent and C clip that is supposed to hold that shaft in.
The clip should be in the bottom of the outer case where 5th gear is, and that ball might be lost in the center diff, mine was when I pulled my trans apart and it was a pain to get out.
Make sure you get your plastic oil trays back where they belong and shim the gears accordingly, upgrade/fix while its apart too!

from what I can see it was rebuilt and forgotten, there is red locktight on all the bolts and white ink marks on things.
let's hope it was just forgotten.
I cant cet that stupid clip off, to get that big round thing off that the shaft slides into. I guess I need to find the right tools.
Does anybody think I can find that little ball in a F5M22 transmission?

For sure!! I was able to pick mine up, and shake it around until it fell out where I could get it with a magnet. WHEEW talk about being anxious and frustrated at the same time!

No you can't find that ball in a f5m22, its an AWD only piece, but I got one at a hardware store. I believe it was a .25" stainless steel ball bearing.

To get that snap ring off you need pliers that look like this
ARMSTRONG Tools 67-555 Pliers, Lock Ring Pliers, Standard Design; 9"

I have that other trans laying in the corner, that's what came out of the talon.
I figured I would keep it for spare parts if needed.
I read your write up on your AWD swap, GREAT WORK MAN!

why are they even removable, why cant it be just one piece?
