My dad has herd of DSM's being prone to overheating and then having allot of problems afterwords. is this true?

As long as you take care of her, she takes care of you. DSM's have their own problems just like other cars, they brake down and you fix them like normal.

well if it is the 420a motor replace the headgasket on it when u get it...the stock ones are pos...and like to go bad...then it likes to over heat...

I've had to change my headgasket twice, both came of stock engines. the one on there now is fairly new, about 20K miles on it.

When you consider that some of the DSMs on the road today are better than ten years old, you're going to find issues with them in terms of reliability - especially if you intend to modify one. Ask your dad how well that old Nova in the classifieds in the Sunday paper will run without putting any elbow grease into it.

If you're shopping for a DSM, be sure to thoroughly check it out for any leaks, squeaks and rattles before you buy it. Then consider just how much money you're willing to invest into getting it back to reliable status. The first modifications you should perform on any "new" DSM is routine maintenance. Replace things like belts, hoses, brakes, etc.. On a fairly stock DSM, overheating problems should be relatively easy to rectify. Coolant, thermostat and radiator cap will resolve most issues.

Basically, if you put in the effort to make sure you're starting your mod plan with a stable platform that's been freshened up and in order, you will have less trouble as you progress.
