Is there any point trying to make a 1g 6bolt FWD turbo into a legit track car?

Well i'm just wondering, since i have a fwd, if i could ever put down enough power and make it stick to do even reasonably well at a road course or autox...

No awd swap for the 1st gens. There's a point to it because you want to be different, time attack they are pretty beastly, and there is a guy with a 2g that is running a relatively simple setup doing 10s and that isn't to bad if you ask me.

On a fwd? I think with the right suspension and tires we can do good.:thumb:

Ok...? I have heard multiple things about an awd swap for the 1st gens... what's the real deal there? I'm running fairly stock right now and on most corners, even slight, i get major wheel slippage in second and third. Detrimental much?
Is there a way to solve/fix this?
Is it simply an issue of rubber?

What kind of suspension would you recommend?

1st gen awd conversions are MUCH MUCH harder than 2gs. From what i've read on here if you have to ask then its probably not the job for you.

I'd go with a half shaft mod, good quality lsd, solid motor mounts and some slicks. That would get you pretty good traction. If you are still having issues than you might look into some adjustable front struts.

To prove how good of a driver you are once you start cutting times down. Takes a lot more practice and learning how the car is going to react to how you launch it out of the hole. Traction will be your #1 enemy and will be a headache. There are ways around it, like slipping the clutch, or knowing how long to stay out of full throttle until those tires will stick under WOT, suspension/tires/LSD. As with any car, it takes seat time. FWD is just more of a challenge

Kay, what's the deal with a half shaft mod? How does it work/benefit? Install/price?

It prevents the car from violently torque steering. It is a driver side awd axle and intermediate shaft. The intermediate shaft has a carrier that bolts it to the block, this puts the inner joints at roughly the same distance from the outer.

Ok, i see. I googled it but didn't find too much for kits... Is it a DIY or is there a place to get em? suggestions?

No point, go awd and never look back.

I have to agree with Burk.. There is an AWD option for our platform, no reason to beat a dead horse. Sure you can build a legit FWD car, but with AWD as a factory option, the choice to build a FWD car is usually for personal reasons (already own a FWD car that your emotionally attached too, can't find a local AWD shell, can't "afford" to buy an AWD version, or you just want to take the path less traveled). Bottom line, (or question to the OP from me would be), Why do YOU want to build a FWD car?

There is no kit, you just need to find the awd driver side axle and intermediate shaft. It bolts right in. Just remove the old axle, install the intermediate/axle, bolt it to the block and you are done.

This should answer your question and leave no room for doubt: DSM Forums - Time Attack Build Blog :: 1997 Eclipse GST Spyder :: Andrew Brilliant (<- Click on it)

Took a quick look at that link; man, that's perfect! Great pics and instructions. I'll definitely have to look into getting that done! And a beauty fwd too, geez!!

I'm going to university, so i don't have the money to do buy an AWD or shell. I want to build a FWD car because i would like to see the looks on rwd and awd owners when i blow'em out of the water!! and also... ### a fwd is what i've got. HAH!

A lot of you people are talking about drag racing where as the the OP is talking about street course / autox.

Yes you can setup a FWD for street/autox. Yes you can do well. Its more of a skill > power thing with that. Yes you want to run every mod you can for your class, but most of that is just suspension stuff in the lower brackets.

1g's have notoriously CRAP suspension designs. It sucks, but there is a lot of little things you can do to help setup your 1g FWD for autoX and road racing. It's going to be 50% suspension, 50% parts compatibility, and 100% good driving. If you see where I'm going with this...

Class rules, the amount of time you have to race, and your wallet will dictate 99% of your setup, the rest is up to you! LOL
