Is the 10" wide tire on a DSM a myth?

Whats the widest we 1G guys can go?

I'm running a 245-45-17 on a +40 17x8 wheel and had to grind down the pinch weld on the control arm and re-weld it so everything would clear. I would say there's probably about 3-4 mm between the tire and the control arm. I wanted to leave a little room to account for sidewall movement during hard cornering. The outside of the tire is flush with the rear quarter panel and the fronts stick out beyond the fender every so slightly. The tires are Dunlop Direzza DZ101's.

EDIT: Front fenders are rolled slightly so the lip doesn't rub and cut into the outer part of the tread during hard bumps or very hard cornering.

That's funny. I have 215's on my daily. 15x5.5" wheels.

Nothing wrong with 215s, as long as it can take the weight. I have 215/65/15s on my Evo, but mounted on a sensible wheel - a Braid 15x7. 5.5" is not in the same (bush) league as as 9.5", but it's rather sub-optimal.

My point was that people really need to learn to not post about their 215s on 9.5" wheels in handling tech.

Tire or rim really, I'm trying to get as much rubber on the road as possible. This car is currently being transformed in order to start road racing. I actually no nothing about the best setup for this type of racing so there will be a steep learning curve.

I recently went through the decision of picking wheels and tires for my car. I street drive, autox, drag race, and (hopefully soon), road race this car. That being said, I was trying to pick a set of wheels suitable for all conditions. I decided on a 17x9 +35 with a 255/40/17 tire. Overall, I'm happy with my decision. I have fairly wide tires, they don't stick out ridiculously, the offset pushes the wheel in as far as possible (I have 4mm clearance at the rear knuckle with a 10.2" section width), and the particular wheel I chose can clear Evo brakes and I think all DSM big brake kits with rotors less than 14".

265/30/19 on a 19" x 10.5" Volk GT-7 Pulled, and rolled in the rear w/ 2" drop

This thread is about setting up a road-racing car, not some show-and-shine car. Please, let's keep 19s out of here, even if either or both the wheel and tire are 10" wide.

The OP asked if a 10" tire would fit on a DSM. Regardless of if the 19s are a good "handling" addition, the fact that he has a 10.5" wheel on his car is helpful information in my opinion.

A pic would help as well since everyone's idea of fitment is very different.

I'm running 245-45-17 Federal RS-R (stiff sidewalls so the tire actually is wider than normal road tires) with 7.5" rim and 37mm offset.
That is the maximum I can roll the fenders and tires are scrapping on the inside frame, so I'll need to lock steering angle.
But the car is lowered about 65-70mm compared to stock so on a stock height car the scrapping might not appear.

In the rear, the tires would fit if the car had slightly camber, but since it is a FWD it doesn't.
The axle support strut is modified to keep the rear tires centered because of the low suspension.

The pictures are made BEFORE any rolling of the fenders!
But car wasn't driveable like that it scared the shit out of me. It took a hammer and a baseballbat to make the tires fit (I have no new pictures)

Nice idea but not practical in my case, car wouldn't be street legal anymore (damn I hate german TÜV)

How low is your suspension and what spring rates do you run? Camber specs? Seems like most with 255's have a higher ride height to keep from rubbing. Just curious because your setup looks really good.

I run just the Tein SS coilovers, nothing special about them. Front and rear are lowered all the way, with the rear having an adjusting collar taken out. So that would come out to a -3.4 drop in front and about a -2.65 drop in rear. Not ideal for handling in any way, but there are no road courses around here anyhow so why not have it lowered down for now.

As I said though, front doesn't rub at all from my experience, while rear still does rub some on the fender. I run -1.8 camber in front and -2.8 in rear at the moment. When it still had the collar in the rear I ran -2 camber in the rear and rubbed about the same amount. I never run the stiff setting on my coilovers however, I don't feel a need for it as little as it rubs. One of these days I am hoping to get the rears cut and rewelded so I can pull them out more and run correct camber
