Is my engine a 420a or 4G63??

Sault Ste Marie,
okay, I feel like a total idiot asking this, but I was reading up on engines, and apparently the 420a isnt good at all compared to the 4G63. I know the 420a is chryslers, but on wikipedia (not saying wiki is god or anything) says that the 4G63 is only for the 1997+. and I always thought my 1995 tsi awd eagle talon was 4G63, even says mitsubishi on it. And my next newbie question is.. what is SAFC??

k now that the newbie question is outta the way,
I have a 16g small turbo, 2.5" turbo back exhaust, no cat, turbosmart boost controller, K&N cai. so I know I need fuel upgrades.. rail, pressure reg, pump and injectors..

what should I get, I want a decently fast car, but also very reliable. and i know its bad to have the 16g on already, without fuel upgrades, but i got the boost down, and the car is sitting for now.

You have a 4g63.
SAFC = super air fuel controller
190lph walbro is enough for a 16g. You don't really need an AFPR or aftermarket fuel rail. Go with 660ccs.

You have a 4G63, SAFC= Super Air Flow Converter made by apexi, and alot of people will say get a 255 fuel pump rewire it, add a Fuel pressure regulator, use DSM Link for tuning and k is not okay

Check out the VFAQ's on the site, as well as probably any question you have has probably been answered, just use the search feature.

What you really need is a data logger so you can see what your engine is doing... You could drive it fine with the 16g as long as you have a logger which will tell you if you are close to maxing out your stock injectors...

you have a 4g63T. The 420a has weaker internals and aluminum heads therfore making it (not as good)

here is an easy way they look different enough to see it once you know what they look like.

4G63T

if you have a 420a your valve cover will look like this
420a(see attached image)

SAFC is S=Super A=Air F=Fuel C=Controller

It can be blue or black and some people hide them to look clean or trick people a little more thinking they don't have that kind of tuning power.

Hope this helped you out! GL

420a engine was on the lower models, internals cant handle close to as much power, the 4g63 is one of the most overbuilt engines made " bulletproof" some will probably say.

4g63 can handle way more then stock boost ( 19 psi with stock headgasket i think?) as far as internals a 1g can handle 450 horse power before your going to start breaking stuff. On a 2g its supposedly 350.

2gs are susceptible to crankwalk also ( only the 4g63 ) and it will ruin your engine. read on here somewhere crankwalk happens on about 35% of our cars. 1g 90-92.5 are basically immune to crankwalk.

the 4g63 is an interference basically if your timings thrown off..your valves smack into your pistons =)

thought id throw a little more info out there for you

Plenty of people have used more boost on stock head gasket..

I don't know the exact incidence of CW but it's definitely not that high.

I guess you have a weak car then, since your head is aluminium also. You should not be allowed to post in this forums with such kind of advice. Please read some about our cars and come back to give advice to people who really need it.

It's more around 20% from what I heard.

He must think LS1's are weak shit or something then since they are aluminum blocks.

In regards to the valve cover posts above by BulletShiftTSi....I snapped this pic while recently changing the valve cover gasket on my 420A; I thought you guys would enjoy it. Surprisingly, it confuses the sh!t out of people who only give it a quick glance:

Confused me at first! What N/Ts came with that valve cover?
