is it worth it? put turbo on 420a ?

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

I have been stuck working on 420a's for the last year because my friend owns one. He's like 19 so he can do whatever he want's with his car, and doesn't have parents to tell him otherwise; I however do.

So he decided to throw a turbo on his N/T 420a. Cool. Guess what happened there? He blew a head gasket, we know that for sure. I mean yeah, the fast was fast as fawk to begin with. But he didn't have any fuel mods, no FPR, an SAFC II on it's own to "tune" the car, and for God's sakes; he didn't even have an intercooler! Ebay 50-trim and no intercooler, on a stock 420a N/T? BAD!

So he screwed the engine. I mean, the thing ran like it was hella' cammed when it wasn't. We tore it down, put a $800 short-block in it and called it good. He threw some bigger injectors in it, with no FPR again, and no tuning software besides the SAFC. The injectors stuck open and almost washed his hone out. Not cool at all. (His oil was LITERLY almost all gas whne we changed it).

He does have Eagle rods, JE Pistons and ARPs, but he is still a long way from doing what he is trying to do as we speak.

For you, I would suggest throwing a EDZ into the car. That is the 2.4L N/T from a Caravan. Something like that beefed up might give you what you want. If they put it in a van, and the can haul 6+ people, then it HAS to get the thing movin' if it's in a car half the size, weight and carrying 1/4th the ammount of people.

AND if you REALLY must have a turbocharged car WITHOUT turbocharging the car (oxy moron much?), then throw an SRT-4 engine in the thing. I mean really. You won't know the definition of traction, but who cares? LOL Believe me, 500WHP at the front wheels it's want you want.. That is coming from a guy who car spin 1st-2nd in his stock 2.0L GS-T... Hope this "helps".

Thanks Mods... This is the kind of thread that should have been locked. Can you lock this? And I suggest that mayb some of us Knowledgeable 420a members select a few "reference" posts that get posted when a mod locks a post for being stupid/over posted/over discussed. perhaps " your thread has been locked. check out these posts etc....

this kinda crap is driving good members nuts and out.. we built this site with knowledge time and our own experience thru burning cash..Just a thought..

OP. go search. 420a is capable of power, you need an adder like turbo. the Hawaii guy.. GTFO..

Just get a 4g63 and get her to 350 and that's all I'm gonna say.

Not trying to really get into this (battle of 420a and 4g63) their is a 420a that made 661 whp and 463 tq. The user is DSM-ZERO. He has many thread about how he got to this point and a list of parts that he has put in along with the price tag. So If you really want to hit big number look for him and his threads. He is on youtube as well with the same user name. Good read and lots of information.

@ op don't give up what you want but from this thread you should have gained some us full information about you choices.

Posted a video of his car and a the link to help you in the search.

If you want 500 out of the 420a might as well work for 3 years straight just to get all the things you need. then you will have a 500 hp FWD car that will wheel hop for days. or u can just sell it and go look for a gsx or gst with the 4g63 that you better off with. That is actually what my plan is.

I'm not sure if you are trying to be flip, sarcastic, a wise guy or funny, but many of your posts are running a fine line of misinformation.

I did 567whp with a little over 3k into it. It took me about 6 months to do (and this was with a water to air intercooler). Putting down power with a FWD does take some expertise. But wheel hop is a problem with your driving or your set-up not just because its FWD. I'm a former RWD old school guy and it took me some practice to get FWD down. Some people enjoy the challenge.

As for a GST, that car is also FWD so you would have the same inherent problems.

I'm sorry but can we just close forums like these?
:beatentodeath:

Haven't you already received one warning in this thread? Would you like another? :ohdamn:

If you keep posting "Why won't you close this already?" it keeps the thread open and alive with all the BS you N/T haters like to post in here. There have been a few helpful posts just above yours, and I cleaned up all the crap a few days ago. Either ignore the thread or report posts that don't stay on topic.

If you have a real reason to post in here (e.g. providing helpful info/links), then feel free. But if you're just going to run your mouth, do it in a reported post so we have documentation of the issue and that people care enough to want things closed and not just troll.

I'm not trying to be negative or troll what so ever. I was just wondering why improper grammar gets more attention than these threads? And please don't take this at me coming at the staff or being disrespectful, it just seems to be a common belief for most of us who wonder why there isn't stricter monitoring on thread topics.

But then again, this isn't the place for that and i'll bring that up in the proper place.

that looks amazing what front mount do you have on there and where did you get the piping. also how much boost and is it 50 trim? H4g64t

These are troll threads....

Come on man, do we really need to see 30 threads a week like this. Its complete nonsense.

How about a report thread button? Enough reports you lock it up? Sounds fair enough.

Just sounds like a lot of our members don't know how to ignore things to me. If I see a thread that I feel is dumb or isn't going anywhere, I don't open it or close out of it if I had opened it.

Report thread - report post...what's the difference?

If you have issues with how we handle the forums, please start a new thread in the Site Feedback section or PM Chris if you want to discuss it with him directly. No more off topic posts in this thread.

Honestly I can barely understand what you are saying. Now I have meet, seen, talked to many people who have turboed the 420a, most of them say it's a waste of money very few say it was worth it. Personally I wanted to turbo my first n/t, but after reading the forums and looking at prices I decided it wasnt for me. I suggest research as this has been asked many many times and there is a ton of info on it all over the forum and google. If you decide it's something you want to do by all means go for it many have done it, and a couple are still happy with the decision. Bottom line it's your time and money. Not trying to sound like a ass in anyway, but like I said it has been asked a bunch of times. Good luck with whatever you decide.

thanks alot and yea sorry i was getting kinda pissed from all the BS on this thread i figured this site was to help newbies like me who no little or nothing abt DSM's so thanks for your input it helps some what im not looking for 500hp or nothing i just want my cars full potential

Ill say this. Whether or not its worth it. For what it IS worth. I'm turboing my 420a I'm getting the Hahn kit. Not most of the ebay turbos running around on this site :p

I'm doing because seeing is beleiving. And you can hardly believe anything from the text of an internet titan.

Do it bro!

I'm still going to by an AWD GSX. Not somuch for the motor. But for the AWD... then I'm gonna make it JDM as heck

I bought the ebay kit for my gs.I paid $1000 for the kit.Ive had my car running great for about 2 years now(knock on wood). But the only things that are original from the kit are the turbo manifold, turbo, hks bov, intercooler and alum piping.all the other stuff from the kit was garbage including the wastegate.Buy the time i bought the WB,255 walbro, gauges, bypass valve,FCD,good vac lines, vortec fmu, proper fuel lines,FP gauges,I was in for another $1500.I was able to weld up some old Harley pipes for the WG dump pipe which blows out behind my left front tire. I tried to cut corners whenever I could,But try to buy the best you can afford.I didn't think the turbo would hold up this long being its from ebay.I took it apart and checked for play and wear and everything still looks new.whatever you decide just buy the best that you can afford and once you get everything working properly(A/F mix espec),then you can upgrade to a better turbo.make sure you use the correct oil restrictor fitting and set up the position of your oil dump tube on your turbo.Hope this will be helpfull.if you decide to go turbo, contact me and I will help you personaly.everybody with the hate talk should be ashamed of themselves.:barf:We were all in his shoes at one time or another!:notgood:O-YA it was well worth going turbo.all the guys that used to beat me,dont want to race any more!:sneaky:

If you do decide on it, I'll give you some advise I learned the hard way. Don't do it if it's your only car.

I literally vomited when I read this section. It is full of the most newbish BS that it literally turned my stomach.

It's called crankwalk, and it refers to excessive horizontal play in the crank due to a worn thrust bearing. IT CAN HAPPEN TO ANY ENGINE. It was slightly more common in early 7 bolt engines, and by more common, I mean it statistically happened at a percentage rate higher than other cars, but still a very small percentage at that.

Whatever retard you saw at your "cruz" please go and punch him in the face. You don't "see" crankwalk happen, and it certainly does not happen out of the blue or all of a sudden. I bet the nimrod hasn't even checked his crankshaft for play, or even knows how. No I bet, like the absolute fricking ricer moron he is, he just assumed it was crankwalk, because his brain functions at a level so sub-optimal to the rest of the world, that he went with the first ricer thing he could think about.

THANK YOU!! I swear the newbishness on this board has increased dramatically. People dont search for anything or read the tech sections at all.

To the OP, follow the tech section first or go get a turbo model.

the guy came here asking for advise,he obviously needs it.What he doesnt need is to be torn apart because he bought a 420A and doesn't know what to do.all you bashes need to grow up!If you dont have advice for the guy keep your childish comments to yourself.Whom ever is in charge of this site should do somthing about this crap allready!if you guys hate the 420As so much stay out of the 420A forums! Its one of the only place that a newbie can post.theres plenty of other stuff you can read about

Lol, who said anything about crankwalk? I'm guessing you posted in the wrong thread?

OP, a lot of the "search it out" input has merit here. It is a subject that is brought up at least on a weekly basis. A lot of the "other" input has no reason being there.

If you do decide to go turbo, here's a couple of links that may help you out;

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/420a-turbo-conversion/366603-end-all-parts-list-go-turbo.html

2GNT.com - GSGoinFast_Turbosystem
(its on here too, just have quick access to that link LOL)

You should probably read through both of those and then you would have questions that could be answered by searching. If you can't find the answer then, you could ask more pointed questions.

so help me. how much hp is enough to be fast for fwd?

Based on this comment and your others, I'm going to say you are, uneducated, uninformed, uneducated and probably a ricer that doesn't know how to drive.
I'm going to guess that you are 16/17 years old and want to impress the slutty chicks at your school with your 500hp car that you will wrap around a pole in less than 200miles of owning.
Here is what I tell people like you to start out with. Learn how to drive. I don't mean how to drive fast, or "cool". Learn how to drive and obey the speed limit and other laws of your area and drive RESPONSIBLY. Nobody likes anyone any age acting a fool in their car in someone else's neighbor hood. It earns you a bad rep and fast.

Learn how to handle your STOCK 140hp car. Learn/read/do maintenance and cleaning. If you can't maintain a 140hp car and can't keep it clean you have no business going any further at all.

As everyone will tell you, you can't make 500hp without making 400, and can't do 400 without 300 and so on. So let's start out and say that your car is rated at 140 hp. AFTER maintenance is done, you can some visuals like rims and lowering you can add an intake and exhaust. Being at the age you are at I'm guessing you will have to work a few months to save up enough money to get maintenance, intake and exhaust. Then you can come back and tell us what you think of your car and if you have gotten any tickets for doing stupid shit. If not we can continue your journey to 150hp. Yes I said it, your journey starts at STOCK form and then once you have proven yourself you can start and be in search of 150hp to the wheels. And keep in mind unless you have tons of money to spend on suspension and tires anything over 200(ish) to the front wheels is pretty useless on the street.

So young jedi, I leave you with this link to begin your journey.
