420a worth it?

First of all I am completely new to this tuner thing. I have always owned and had a interest in mustangs. The eclipse though always intrigued me and some of my friends are dsm nuts. Well I came across a 96 eclipse at an auto auction in good shape at a dirt cheap price so i picked it up as my next toy. It is a rs 420a nonturbo. Now I have read on here countless posts where people are bashing the 420a. Can anyone give me any intelligent feedback on whether or not this car is worth modding or if I should just sell the car. If the 420a would never be able to compete with a 4g63 please let me know. My goals for this car are to run it at a local dragstrip i always go to but I dont want to waste my time, hardwork, and money if its not worth it.
