Is it the AC Compressor or the Cluch?

I trying to fiugre out if I should buy a new AC Compressor with clutch or without. Because my AC still works, but its making the clanking and screetching noise. So im guessing its the clutch thats bad and that needs to be replaced. If it were just the clutch it would save me about $250.00.

Thanks,
Ian

Does it make the noise only when the a/c is on and the compressor is engaged, or all the time?

It actually is only on when the ac is OFF. when the ac is engaged the noise goes away and the ac work perfectly. its weird.

My 95 talon does EXACTLY the same thing. It's NOT the idler pulley or the belt. I'm thinking it's the clutch. Can the clutch be replaced without having to buy a new compressor? Any price estimates?

Yes it can be replaced without buying a new AC Compressor, I've already checked. Just not sure if its the actual AC Compressor thats damaged or the clutch. I just may buy them both seperate and then when I get under there see which one is jacked and then return the unused one. Otherwise it seems impossible to actually know without removing the engine mounts. Bummer
