Hi Guys,
I am cleaning up my engine bay and was wondering if I absolutely need my air intake to the turbo since I am running a blow throu GM MAF in the upper intercooler piping. How much will it affect the performance.

One other member asked this and it was said that you still need one because the intake pipe helps smooth out the intake air so that you don't get turbulence. Wisemen correct me if I'm wrong about that

I also found this:

There is no reason to do this.

While a filter mounted right on the turbo will pose less restriction, you will also be sucking in extremely hot air from the exhaust area.
That hot air will probably cause you to lose power.

You need to do your best to keep the intake air cool.

If you were to decide to run with no intake, at the very least get a screen and clamp that onto the turbo so incase a foreign object does hit that area, its going to bounce off instead of destroying your turbo and possibly the motor. For the record I just switched over to SD and needed to pick up a new k&n filter so I drove to the store with no intake on, just a screen clamped on, the sound of the 57 trim sure put a smile on my face and made just about every person I drove by look, your turbo spool is LOUD!!! I ended up buying a 9" K&N and stuck it directly on the end of my FP 4" intake for the reason of colder air and not sucking hot exhaust air.

Plus you wouldn't want a little pebble or anything flying up into your turbo while it's spinning at 50000rpm. That could cause a little bit of damage.

That's a slow spinning turbo. My small 16g at full boost spins at ~147,000 rpm. Just look at the rpm lines on compressor maps.

But the reason you would want an intake is to get colder air. You'd be pulling in hot air from right behind your radiator.
