Is an Apex'i S-AVC-R really worth the money?

Hi everybody.
I've got a little question.
My mecanic has mounted and set-up my EVOIII package with all the nessecary stuff (new clutch, 660cc, intake, fmic, dsmlink,...)

In the package there is a manual boost controller.
Now he told me, at 3000rpms he has got 14.5psi and full boost at 4500rpms there is another umph and there he has got 20.5psi.

Now he told me, that he can bring full boost down to 3200/3300rpms,
but only with an Apex'i S-AVC-R Boost-Controller, because there are more options and finetuning in it.

What do you think?
I thought, there should be full boost at 3.2/3.3 even with an manual boost controller....

Thanks

There is no doubt that electronic boost controllers are better for spooling the turbo faster. However i don't think with a 16g the difference would be that great. If you have the money by all means get the electronic boost controllerbut for that setup I would just save the money and go with a manual boost controller.

I've never ever heard that EBC's make turbos spool faster...Hmmm... Even Shep uses a MBC.

For a GSX, I wouldn't go with an electronic boost controller. If you were FWD and needed additional boost after launch, that's a different thing. I have never heard of EBCs spooling turbos faster either.

Is it me, or does something seem wrong? Hitting 14.5 psi at 4500rpms seems kind of late for an E16g.

Sorry that was my bad. Too early in the morning....I stand corrected.

However 4500rpm is definately too late for a 16g unless you have some kind of problem.

You can make a dual stage with your stock bcs and a mbc for like 5 bucks. So I think a ebc is not worth it. Remember a boost controller can not lower boost. Only raise. You sound like you have a spike problem. If you have 3 inch exhaust and a small internal wastegate you will have creep and spike problems. The wastegate cant flow enough to keep up with the high rpm's. Thus you boost creeps to 20 psi.

An EBC can make the turbo spool faster vs a MBC, this is because they usually offer adjustable gain (or duty cycle, whatever the manufacturer calls it), which will hold the solinoid closed longer to get faster response, where as the response time from a MBC isn't adjustable, its set with the ball/spring combo. On my evoIII I gain 100 or so rpms spool with my EBC, I could probably spool it even quicker but would have poor boost control (large boost spike & boost oscillations) with the gain turned up higher.

most people including myself that have acualy used a AVC-R - think there more of a pita
then they are worth. I cant speak from experiance on other EBC's

I'll 100% agree with this, I had one and couldn't get it to work right for the life of me. No matter what I tried boost would surge in and out 17-22 psi WTF I gave up and sold it.

I have a friend with a 04' SRT-4 and we just installed a AVC-R in his car last weekend along with a stronger adjustable wastegate actuator and it works amazingly! You can tune your boost to whatever you want in 500 rpm increments, and change the duty which does make the turbo spool up quicker, and you can also have different boost settings for each gear. I love it and would also buy one but i dont have $600, but they are definately worth the money!

I just installed one on my GSX with stock turbo and the boost control works well. The only thing I have noticed is that I need to fine tune the settings a little to get full boost in 1st and 2nd gear.

What, did you just reply to all old AVC-R post you could round up ROFL

I would say the lower boost in lower gears would be common. The boost is load based, so the lower the gear, the boost will be slightly lower. Not sure if you have it on auto or manual control (never bothered with auto) but for manual just bump up the start duty cycle slightly for each gear where the boost is lower then desired.
