Ok so my Dad has a 1993 Eagle Talon TSI FWD that he has owned since new, it has now sat for almost 10 years with no attention. Prior to him stopping driving it when he was driving the car would completely die while on the road. I mean no brakes, power steering, no lights on the dash, nothing. He would pull it over to the side of the road, shake the car a little and it would start back up. A few weeks ago I put a new battery in it, and it started right up, no hesitation or anything. Next day car cranks once but doesn't start. I know that there is going to be a large number of problems since it has sat for so long, but I would at least like to get it running to bring it to a shop for a proper inspection. Currently when I put the key in I get nothing, no lights on the dash or a click in the engine.

So my two main questions, what would cause the car to die with absolutely no power, then start back up. And what would cause this draw of power on my battery? Also are the two related.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the feedback, do you know where to get the part? Like is there any specific place?

    Again thanks for the help!

I'd say a short. Any burn marks on the hood? Happened to me once. Taller battery shorted against the hood when I hit a bump. Car totally died. Tough to find.

I don’t think a short because the stopping dead and restarting happens not often but enough to make it unsafe to drive

Thank you for the reply and I will still check for burn marks and any signs of a short.

This is what happened to me. It wasnt often. I'd hit a bump and whole car would shut down. I'm my case it was a short at the battery but a short/connection problem could lay anywhere.

Sat for 10 years? Start with the basics.

Hope you siphoned out the gas tank, and put in fresh fuel, and changed the fuel filter.

Even if this wasn’t the cause of the problem 10 years ago, it could cause more problems now.

You should also check the pick up screen on the fuel pump to make sure it’s clean.

Yes DogWhistle I had before starting it back up, I will also be cleaning the pick up screen, Thanks!
I have started to check check for shorts and also look into the ignition switch if it is bad. My Friend came by and he hooked up jumper cables to the car, we still got absolutely nothing, could this be an indication for the ignition switch or shorts? I am still looking but thought I would post a small update.

Ignition switches can go bad, but it is much less likely the cause of your starting problem, than some of the other common wear points on these DSMs.

I can’t remember exactly the title, but there is a very good How To article here on ‘Tuners on diagnosing a no start situation. It gives you a checklist to run through.

You’ll need to verify your starting circuit, ignition system and fuel system to know what needs repair.

In our experience, it could be as simple as your starter. Brushes on old starters get brittle, and when the electricity starts going through them, they fracture and break, resulting in a no start. Pull your starter and have it tested at a local auto store.

Grounding issue? The OP states that while driving the entire car dies. Electrical and mechanical, he shakes it up and starts. I would start by checking ground connections.

Thanks everyone for the help, I have started to check and clean ground connections, haven’t got around to the fuel filter and the ignition switch yet.

Do these burn marks indicate a short or are they just normal wear and tear?
