intermediate shaft does not fit properly in the transmission

I have a 1992 awd laser and the intermediate shaft does not seem like it is fitting properly in the transmission.. It just seems like it is loose, if you push up or down on it, it will connect with the teeth but when its just resting in there it does not connect with the teeth. Am I missing something?

Is it in the transmission all the way and bolted up to the block? If not, try turning it a little and putting a little pressure on it so that it slides into the tranny. Need more details to help you any further.

tranny is not in the car. it is just very loose and I am wanting to make sure I have the proper shaft before putting the car back together
