So this weekend a friend and I finally decided to tear down my engine. We had no idea what we were going to find in the block. The previous owner supposedly had the engine "professionally built." Once we got the pan off, we discovered the great balance shaft elimination that was performed.

Wow a bolt hand threaded into the original, purposely broken, shaft. I think this one wins this year's prestigious "Ghetto DSM Award." To be fair though, it sounds like it actually worked...so sketchy.

That's actually one of the ways to perform a BSE, though the execution was horrible. At least use a shorter bolt and tap the threads all the way. I used to cut and just weld the oil hole shut vs tapping.

Id rather see that than the smooth ebay stubby shaft.

Now the short block may have been pro built and then he did the dress out and bolted on the front case and set the timing and such.

After the mess I have seen on this car since I bought it over 2 years ago, I know it wasn't. When I picked it up, he made me promise that I wasn't going to sue him once I got it home. The ring gaps are all off. The rod bolts were over torqued. This car has had nearly every hack done to it imaginable. I am almost completely done fixing all of the messes.
