Leave your engine bone stock. I have done all of the bolt on mods for the 420A, and there are not any gains to be made. You wont feel any real difference in power. If I could go back and do it all over again I would not have put any money into upgrading the engine, its just not worth it. If you really like the car and plan on keeping it for a while then spend your money on a nice set of wheels and tires, and upgrade the suspension. I am being as honest with you as possible.

If u really want to keep this car and want more power get an engine from a junkyard and put it on the stand that's really the only viable option for a 420A either start a Turbo or a strocker build.

I wish I never would have spent the money I did on my 420a when I had it but I was young and dumb. Unless you are planning on truly modding this car to be fast in the future I would leave the engine alone since the minor gains dont justify the money/time spent. If you truly want to build a 420a and understand the money it will take to even reach 200 whp then buy all means start buying bolt ons as you can afford them. Everyone who tells you it is not worth it is just trying to spare you from one day looking at your car and saying "i wasted alot of time and money on this POS" like many former 420a owners have. A nice muffler welded on at a exhaust shop and some rims/springs will go along way to making your car more enjoyable. Bottem line it's your car and you can/should do what you want.

From the dyno of a eclipse rs I saw it received the following hp figures:
Modification----HP----TQ
  1. intake--> 2.7--> 4.9
  2. exhaust-->1.1-->1.1
  3. header-->0.4-->2.7
  4. "tune-up"-->2-->1.1
  5. camgears/timing-->7-->5.2
To the op it depends on what your ultimate goals are if you never plan on building a turbo car you can get some of those things (i.h.e) and a few other bolt on upgrades and a nice suspension and call it quits. Just understand that it will not give you zomfg crazzzy hp.

However, if your unsure then you can get stuff that you can utilize for both n/a and turbo like exhaust, suspension stuff, cams,pulleys, etc. You could also in this situation get a cheapo ebay I/h, but just realize you will not make money back on those investments if you do decide for a turbo later on. Not to mention they will most likely change colors after first use.

Haha nice my butt dyno guess for the intake was VERY close, I am good.

i don't think 10 is close to 2.7 on these low of numbers.

btw, after CAI, headers, high flow cat, 2.5" exhaust, magnaflow muffler, MSD coilpack and wires and 155k miles my car only dyno'd 111 whp and 119 wtq

if your car has a lot of miles on it, your "upgrades" will probably only make it about as fast as it was stock brand new.

140 hp is crank hp. more like 110-115 whp (brand new)

OP - This is spot on. see the torque increase with intake and header. horsepower is just a number torque is what you feel. most importantly do what YOU want.

Not sure what you are talking about? I never said 10hp.

Yea the older motors just don't have the power like they are when new.

You and a few other people mentioned putting a turbo on it but I really don't have the money for it. I mean, I would need an intercooler to go with it right? And I've heard a few other people say that it'll be easy to blow a 420a with a turbo unless I put better rods and piston heads on it. Money I don't have LOL

Lol no offense but since you dont even know what pulleys are I wouldn't even suggest looking at a turbo setup yet. Not trying to be mean or anything as we all start off somewhere. If I were you I would probably just save your money or buy a suspension setup and leave it at that until you gain more knowledge as to what you want. Matter of fact just leave everything alone and READ READ READ.

Lol. Naw, I actually know what they are, I just didn't know they were refereed to simply as "pulleys", I just thought it had a different name LOL :thumb:

just save it and use it for good maintenance. buy an drop in K&N filter... car is almost 15 years old, it's going to need something eventually.

This lesson brought to you by my first car, a 96 Cavalier with the 2.2 OHV. Before I was beating anyone I had an intake, P n' P on the intake manifold & head, shaved the head, threw in some crane 1.6:1 roller rockers intended for 2.8 V6, header, straight pipe, and stripped a lot of the interior out.

On a non turbo your goals should be to make it sound good and look nice thats it! unless you spend crazy money on a NT your parents mini van is still going to beat it in a race LOL but forreal you got a 2gb eclipse make that thing look and sound sexy!

When I had the NT my neighbor really did beat me in a race with a minivan LOL. I couldn't believe it LOL, it was bad.

You must not know how to drive then... You must be like that brand new ZL1 Camaro I saw on youtube today thats best run was a 15.4

Oh I know how to drive that is for sure. And you don't know what I "am like" so quit hatting on the fact that a minivan is faster than your car :thumb:

He did have a head start, but my 97GS didn't even have enough power to keep up with his acceleration pace, he was still pulling away from me.

Maybe it's just me but this NT thread has some "off" people that's for sure. Who cares how fast it is really. The only point I wanted to make in this thread is that a cold air intake will add power and yes a louder noise.

I've raced two mini-vans when i first got my car "ricing around" about 4 years ago/ I don't understand how it would even be close. And I have beaten cars with a 100-150 more hp than me on the strip by launching good and knowing how to shift, where they clearly did not. Define 'fast' some people think 12s is fast, most v8 guys will laugh at you for that to.
Point being, if he wants to get a nice intake let the guy, it will be healthier for his car and give him a small bump, and save him money down the road by replacing his filter every couple thousand miles. Besides, everyone has to start somewhere.
