I've been trying to start up my car for a while, everything is perfect but it just won't fire up. My buddy was looking at the Cam's and said it looks like you have two of the same cam. He said the dots are suppose to line up with another even when both dowel pins are pointed up the marks are lined up.

Here is a picture. Are the exhaust and intake cam suppose to be different? Mine look to be identical.

I'm pretty sure you can mix and match. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

However I have seen many different styles of intake/exhaust cam gears and I have never had a problem with using different gears. They all should have the dowel pin, then a notch 90 degrees to the right and 90 degrees to the left.

Well I have a 6 bolt long block in the motor so it is for a 1g.

Here's a picture of stock 1g cam gears lined up.

Now for some reason, the part that is white/scratched next to the timing mark is on the outer side of my intake cam, almost like I have two exhaust cams or something. But in the picture above, the white marks are both at the inner parts.

ANOTHER thing I noticed was my cam gears have 4 spokes and the picture to the link above of the 1g cam gears have 5 spokes. Do I have 2g cam gears?

They are the same exact PN MD170799.

Use a straight edge all the way across the cam gears. All the marks should line up with the belt properly tensioned.

how is that possible on a 1g head?

one has a slot in the back for a cas and one doesnt. also the lift is slightly different to... (taken from brian crower)

I still think it should be fine. The marks are at the same place on intake and exhaust cam gears in relation to the dowel pin. Everything is correctly aligned as far as I can tell in your first pic.

Have you checked to make sure you are getting fuel/spark?

If he had two intake cams then everything would not be fine, both intake and exhaust would open up at the exact same time...

To eliminate confusion, I am talking about the cams, not cam gears.

Ok, I was a little confused, but after reading a little more carefully I understand. I was talking about cam gears as was the poster. I would suggest to the original poster taking the valve cover off and checking the cams to see what they look like in relation to each other while the motor is still "in-time". That should tell you if you have 2 of the same cams.

Go through your ignition and fuel ... again. LOL

Youre have a hell of time with that car huh? Now youre scaring me that my 2.3 wont start up... ugh..

Absolute_DSM, what is the color of your car. It looks sick. Any more pictures?

Well, I'm posting a reply to see if any of you have pictures of the camshaft. I'm rebuilding my first ever DSM. It's an eclipse GS 2g. The part of the camshaft that has got me stumped is the end of the camshaft where the position sensor bolts next to. I believe I might have tossed a camshaft O ring. The unit that bolts onto the end of the camshaft doesn't seet in. It leave a half a centimeter all around. Hence, I assume there is a seal I left out.

Oh also, if you guys would happen to know, I got new camshaft seals, the ones that are located on the side which the actual cam gears bolt onto, were the only things I needed? It doesn't look like there is anything that would keep it from sliding towards the cam gears and eventually out of assembly. Would the timing cover play a role in keeping those seals in place?

Sorry for the long post and please help :D
