Installing starter, need to align gear?

Instead of making a new thread I figured I would add to this one. MY starter would spin but would not engage until I hit 5-9 tries. I believe there is no way that the flywheel could turn b/c the motor wasnt kicking. sometimes it would but then it wouldnt start. I took the starter out and had it tested...The gear came all the way out but why would my car not start and sit there and make a spinning noise?

I haven't had an issue with the starter on my car. However, our cars do have a starter solenoid and on older make of cars that is what actually "kicks" the starter gear out to the flywheel. It is located under and behind the radio on a 2G (not sure on a 1G).

The reason it can work fine on the bench is because they hook up directly and bypass the solenoid.
