Hey guys, I pulled the 6 bolt out of my car a few weeks ago due to 2 rod bearing failures, but I went ahead and decided to upgrade the valvetrain as well. But I am having problems. I removed the old valve springs and retainers using the snapon ga318a tool, but I cannot get the new evo valve springs and retainers in with the tool. The retainers only go down about halfway. I think I'm giving it too much pressure, it's causing the valve to drop down partially. I have rope in the cylinder so I have to keep compressing it after I try to hit the retainer and keepers in with the tool. The head is still on the block. What am I doing wrong?

I have the same basic tool made by Lisle. Anyway, I had the same problem putting the stock retainers on stock valves/valvesprings. The issue is that the edge of the tool wasn't pushing the valvespring down far enough so that the middle spring-loaded part would push the keepers in. What I did was use a spare valvespring washer (I think that's what it's called, goes between the head and the bottom of the valve) and flipped it upside down on top of the retainer. I didn't hit it with a hammer or anything, just pushed on it with my bodyweight and it worked fine.

Ramen that helped a ton, I got about half of them done, but I ran into another problem. Between cylinder 2 and 3 on the intake side there is another cam journal and the tool to take the keepers out is way to big to fit. I think to put them in it will be okay because the attachment is skinnier. Did you run into the same problem?

Gamble - Next time I do this I will probably buy that tool...

actually, I didn't because I removed the keepers and retainers before I had the tool. I basically just used a socket and whacked it with a hammer until the keepers popped out. I did use the tool to put them back in, though.

Are these EVO 8/9 valve springs and retainers?
