DSMers...I'm here again!

Getting time to install the timing set on this '92 Eclipse GS with 4G63 nonturbo engine.

When I insert the stick through the side of the block, I can only slide it through and lock the balance shaft when the oil pump shaft is in position as in the photo below or 180degrees from that (like 7 or 8 o'clock).

When I had the oil pump apart for inspection I lined up the dots on the gears and added a bunch of sticky engine assembly lube to keep them from moving around inadvertently as the front cover went on. I think that was successful but does this misalignment mean I screwed it up? Or can I continue and torque the pump sprocket nut, then time it?

Ok that sounds promising. I had a feeling if I spun it a few times it might line up but I was afraid to try without advice. When I assembled the pump I just set the dot on the drive gear right next to the dot on the driven gear and bolted the cover to front cover.

When #1 is at TDC (as when timing the engine) are both balance shaft weights supposed to be "down?" Looking at a photo of the balance shafts, and referencing the flat for the sprocket, the front balance shaft should be down but since I cant see the rear one thru the hole in the block I'm assuming the stick only goes thru when the weight is down.

I'm confused. Does the stick go through with the sprocket in that position in your photo or not?
Concerning TDC that thought is incomplete. You can be TDC on compression or exhaust strokes.
If you did it right when dowels up on cams you should be at TDC on #1 when marks line up. All 5 marks line up and everything is right IF and ONLY IF the following is true.
1. Dowels are up on cams with marks lined up line from the head. There is no subjectivity here.
2. Crank mark is lined up
3. Front shaft is lined up
4. Rear shaft oil pump mark is lined up AND the stick goes through the hole in the block.

If number 4 isn't true the rear shaft is out of phase.

I turned the pump sprocket one time and now it lines up when the stick slides in. Am I good to go?

Sorry I posted before seeing your 2nd reply. For clarity I do not have the main Timing belt on just yet only the balance shaft belt. I do have the cams locked dowels up, crank hub lined up, front balance shaft lined up.

You can double check easily. Spin it again one full turn. No stick. Another full term. No stick. Another full turn and now you've gone 3. Stick should go in again. and yes that is what you want.

Get the rear shaft phased and stick a belt on it.

Excellent thanks for the help! I am not familiar with these 4G's at all and it's my mother's car so I'm trying to get it back on the road and not coming right back to me so thanks for being my kindergarten teacher.

It all looks like it is in time mechanically. :thumb:
Make sure you put the balance shaft pulley bolt in.
