I did something stupid. I bolted the trans up to a freshly rebuilt motor w/o installing the pilot bushing. I hadn't gone too far regarding getting it back together (drive shaft, t-case and axles are back on the car), so it wouldn't set me back too long breaking it back down again...but you guys think there's a way I could get the bushing onto the torque converter without dropping the trans completely out?

Getting the trans lined back up and installed right is going to be a bear if I have to take it all the way out....

Stupid mistake but I need some advice. What do you guys think? Am I stuck dropping the trans? Or you think I could split it from the motor and wedge it in there....

10-4....that's what I thought.

So, would dropping just the trans be the best way? Or should I pull the whole motor again? Isn't lining up the trans a lot tougher in the car?

I'm old school, but isn't a pilot bushing only needed for the manual transmission?? It's what aligns the pilot shaft.

No. Actually our manual transmissions don't use one. Our flywheels create a sort of "caged" effect that holds the disc (and the input shaft) centered. The autos, however, have a pilot bushing that is used to center the torque convertor and keeps the pump bushing from getting beat too bad and the "flex plate" from twisting.
