Ok, I've got a 1g awd auto and I am trying to replace the transfer case shaft seal inside the bell housing. Is there some sort of tutorial on how to do this the easiest way? I have the end cap off of the transmission but I don't know how to take out the gears between the shaft seal, and plate that I removed. They seem locked in place. I can try to post a picture after I post this. I've searched and it seems that nobody replaces these seals! I would appreciate any help!

Get a manual and look at pics. Or call john shep

I don't have a good factory manual. I was hoping that since these cars are so old, other people have had to change this seal and can simplify the explanation.

So far I have figured out how to take everything but the last piece out from behind the seal. There are a ton of gears and pieces...

You should prob just get a good manual. Because this is not the only thing that will go wrong with your dsm. Its better to get all the info and have it than search ever thing you need.

That doesn't help me at all. I've owned my DSM for 3 years and have had to solve very difficult problems with it. I have someone experienced in transmissions helping me, but we wanted to verify a few things quickly. I posted this thread hoping that someone experienced in disassembling dsm transmission might give me a few quick pointers.

Seriously, if that is all you have to say than why post at all. This was not helpful In any way.

I believe you are actually talking about the OUTPUT shaft seal.

You can replace this without taking any of the transmission apart actually. I know I'm a little late to the party, but maybe the correct shaft name will aid in your search.

This is correct you don't have to take anything in the trans apart. You can pry the old seal out and install a new one pretty easily. Since you have the end case off it will be even easier. Remove the snap ring from the viscous coupler and remove the coupler. When you remove it you will see a small steel ball in the hole in the center diff input shaft. If you smack the output shaft on the transfer case end with a hammer the ball will pop out and the shaft can be removed. Having the shaft removed will make it easier for sure.

For what its still worth... I really like using this site it has a detailed explination on how to do exactly what your'e trying to do and many more typical DSM issues/mods.
