anybody have a boost leak tester? My car is acting funny as hell and i think its probably just a boost leak... it could be my ghetto-rigged afpr though... (i know, not something to ghetto-rig, but i havent gone wot in a while) My car is getting lower than normal vacuum and Lean a/f ratios, im trying to figure out what the problem is.
Any help is appreciated! The sooner i fix this wierd problem the sooner i can turn up the boost and tune!!

LOL... Dude, how have you made it this far without a boost leak tester? You could borrow mine but it might be easier to just make one yerself...

haha, NEWLOGICS FTW!!! Paul's a good guy and always let me come up to use his.

How much is the cheapest air compressor that i can get? I might just have to make one...

Yo dave, where have you been at? I would have expected to see the pix of the cage by now... and for you to have already ran 10s!!! haha
Good thing though... i havent tuned my car at all! Im waiting for my damn paycheck so i can go make a boost leak tester and get an air compressor. I *might* have to get a new FPR after i jerry rigged my one thats on there... damn stripped screw.

Let us know ahead of time when you are ready for the track, i gotta request it off work so i can go!

Yeah, Paul's the awesomest. He just did the whole driver's side of the engine on my GST. Sounds like he's trying to get out of the game though, he bought a house and is all busy with that now.

You can do a boost leak test with a good bike pump (not a shitty bike pump) if you don't have an air compressor. Another option (because I'm a cheap bastard) is to get one of those air tanks for like 20 bucks from Wal-Mart and spend 25 cents at the gas station to fill it up. A fill up lasts for several minutes worth of boost leak testing.

Hullo, I'm still here! I haven't been to the track yet. The roll bar just went in Wednesday night, or should I say Thursday morning? Sean/FFtec busted azz and pulled a late night session to finish installing the bar so I could get on the track quick. It still needs paint, padding, and to get the seat bracket installed. I'm halfway done installing the scattershield. I can finish that in a few days, so if everything goes smoothly I should be able to hit the track this Wednesday!

Danny's got a job? Woohoo! You got upgrade money! I can help you out with a good bike pump like the one I use for boost leak tests.

oh yeahhh! You mush have electric pumps at your work eh?? Do you get a discount? can you pick one up for me and i'll buy it off of you? or should i just come by the shop and talk to you there?

My car is acting wierd... i need to go out and hook dsmlink up and richen it up i think, i dont remember how much i leaned/advanced timing when i was on 15psi and 100 octane, the car runs really lean under boost, like 12-13/1 a/f ratio. Also, when i first let the clutch out in a gear, it goes hella lean and kind of hesitates, then goes to stoich. I am running my same tune for 15psi 100 octane mix where i wasnt getting knock, i put 91 back in the car, got knock, so i turn the boost down to 10psi... still have knock. IVe learned my lesson though, ive been driving around, but no lead foot and no boosting for like the last two weeks, if im too lazy to fix the problem, im not going to boost the car and break it more. Anyways driving around in vacuum has saved me a lot of gas... this tank has lasted a lot longer than any of my other tanks!
One other thing, when i start the car sometimes it idles really lean, like warms up at 16-17/1 a/f ratio... also sometimes i get real low vacuum, like 12in and it goes lean then as well... (17-18/1 a/f ratio) only at idle though, i can watch my boost gauge and when vacuum drops, it goes lean, when i get correct vacuum (15-16in) im running perfectly stoich.

Anybody know what these symptoms are? i just figured i opened up a boost leak when i was driving around at 15psi... im waiting to get a compressor (or a pump from dave) and my boost leak tester, which is on its way (i got lazy and just ordered one for $20 its a nice design though).

Im going to have to ask the other chick i work with if i can switch shifts for wednesday, or maybe next wednesday, ### i want to go to the damn track!! I might quit that job though, and go back to my old delivery job... my friend inherited the company and told me he needs me to work for him again, he raised rates so i'll be making a lot more money, but i'll have to drive the dsm around town to deliver in, until i can save up for another bucket...

oh well thats the end of my long post... ive been sick for a week and all ive been doing is surfin the internet.... boring!!!

The pumps we have at work are manual pumps. Those electric pumps are much slower and only good for the truely lazy, which you are close to attaining, but you're not quite there yet. :) Just come by the shop and I'll see what we have sitting in the warranty pile.

You'd get a better tune looking at the fuel trims. I have a feeling that whenever it goes lean, then clears up you'll see the O2 trim go from cycling around 160% to being locked at 100%. Try it and see what the O2 trim does. When that happens it's the ecu's way of saying 'fuc it, I quit, this things way leaner than I can deal with' and goes into limp mode.

I still wonder what's up with your afpr? It might be causing all sorts of trouble at idle, too. Just take it apart and re-tap the cap for a bigger bolt. You already know it needs to be fixed, maybe it'll fix all the lean/ knock issues too?

It's On! My car is ready for the track tomorrow. Cage is in and painted, 5 point harness is bolted down and adjusted, scattershield fits nicely. I'm leaving the interior stripped bare, it looks more like a racecar that way. Anyone else going?

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh snap... i didnt see this yesterday!!! May the force be with you Dave! THe driving the snot out of your car force!!!

Im going to have to request a wednesday off, or switch to a morning shift so i can get out there in the next couple of weeks.

<10.8 FTFW (for the faster win) haha!

Lets see pics of the cage man!!! i want to see Sean's work!

you can't ####ing say that shit and not tell us what you ran.... god damn it dave. anyone know what size the ####ING coolant drain line for the 14b is. Im talking about the banjo bolt thats on the turbo itself, not the fitting that goes into the water pipe. I think its 21mm, I know its larger than 19mm and smaller than 24mm. I was being pissy all today about that being the only thing holding that pos on, and me not having a 21mm socket yet, and then I remembered why I haven't bought one yet. THE CAR CAME WITH A TOOL KIT, AND ITS USEFUL FOR ONE THING!!!!!! IIRC, the lugnuts are, yep you guessed it, 21mm. After I remove the turbo, all thats keeping that engine in is the transfercase, lower cross members, power wires for the starter motor, knock sensor wire, and four motor mounts. I still have to remove the oil pan, and drain the t-case/tranny though,...

gonad, calm down and go to the "drag strip" forum... and as far as the 10.8, danny just piggybacked off me. i am the real nost-rao-damus. :D

no no no... i was playing "the price is right" where somone guesses a price... "400 dollars bob" and the next person says "$401" thats why i said "<10.8" (less than 10.8 for the retards out there), so mahesh called it, not me.

Either way... good job Dave, when's the next trip out, i can most likely make it in 2 weeks.

I'm having a friend of mine build me a trrrrrrrrrrranny, and the car's just about done. First goal: Low 12s. Expect a lot of annoying calls Dave :)

We've tentatively planned to throw in the tranny at his house next weekend... but you know how these things are.

I have some brown sludge in my coolant. I REALLY hope it's rust and not oil. If it's oil... well... yeah.

whups, I thought everyone saw my other thread.

There were two other fast DSM's out there, too. My friend Joel with the blue Eclipse running consistent low 12's.
A guy named Cam (Kam?) was out there with his dark brown 2G. I watched him hit a 12 flat with shifting troubles. I hope he works it out, the motor is putting out some good power. He just needs to get the power to the wheels the whole way down the track and it'll run some fast times.

Annoying calls? Oops sorry, I'm online right now, phone doesn't work! :)

haha, mahesh! i was just asking myself why im on tuners at 11 on a friday.... damn man, nothing crackin tonight, well there is stuff to do, but i have work at 8am tomorrow and value my sleep more than my party time!!!

Im trying to get a certain day where i can get off work a little earlier than 3 on a wednesday so that i can strike up to the track...and hopefully hit 12's after having a dsm for so many years.....if i dont get a 12 second slip this year im going to hunters point and burning my car and collecting insurance money.......... after i pull the motor to throw in a colt or something. haha

Haha... isn't Kam the guy with the built motor from FFTEC... with 2 wastegates on a custom manifold?

STILL AT WORK. ARGH!

Yup, that's the guy. It was a Turbonetics cast manifold with two wastegates on it. Nice setup, that was the first time I saw a 2G with short route IC pipes- straight through the radiator support just like a 1G.

mahesh, you must be on salary. How else are they getting you to pull so much overtime? Or are you trying to set a record for paying off your student loan the quickest? :)

i believe sean said its a gt35r with the twin scroll t3 .78 a/r housing. Thats why there are two wastegates, the exhaust manifold was welded to have the four cylinders divided throughout the turbine housing. He tried to convince me to get it over the t4, but Im still undecided. I kinda bought myself some major time by going a completely different route with my money.
