I'm stuck between a 2.0 and a 2.3

I have a 6 bolt motor I'm building and have been through 2 cranks first needed cut so I purchased another to get polished and checked. That didn't work out so great cause it spun a rod. So I'm to the point where i can dish out for an eagle crank. If I'm doing a Eagle crank I kinda wanna build a stroker. I've already purchased my pistons and rods #208478 85.50mm 8.5:1 but I believe I need stroker pistons due to wrist pin location and the displacement with the 100mm crank. Either I purchase a 88mm and just get the build done or take even more effin time build a 2.3 bring the block to the shop to get decked cleaned again and freeze plugs. I know I should do that anyways atleast freeze plugs. I'm torn and I've been pushing my budget but need to act fast I'm getting frustrated with and just wanna drive it. Does anyone have 2.3s they wanna share?

Save money and go with the 2.0 . You already got the poisons for it.

Would you mind saying what your budget is?
What about the future use of this car?
Might be easier to make suggestions knowing those. I'd probably skip the aftermarket crank unless you wanted a non-stock stroke length, like the 94mm. Going to a 2.3L means not using the pistons you already have.

I've decided I'm going to go with 2.0. I'm going to have dsm graveyard do a full Rotating Assembly with their dynamic balance work. I'm hoping they'll email me back saying they have a good looking oem crank laying around.
Save me a little with the Eagle crank due to machine shop charges. Maybe in the future I'll build a stroker, I love the idea of more torque and turbo spool. This will be my weekend warrior as well as daily driver. HP goal is 450-500 planning on eventually autox. They ask to also send Flywheel, Pressure Plate, Crankshaft Timing Gears, Harmonic Balancer. Should I buy new of any of this. After market Harmonic balancers look interesting and a good investment.

all of which would be a good upgrade to do minus the crankshaft timing gears. unless you mean cam gears then I would upgrade them. but the pressure plate and flywheel need to be upgraded to fit your goals I would also upgrade your clutch disc to a 6 puck

I've always went with a 2.0 until my latest DSM. I bought a 2.3 built by English Racing and I can say that I'll NEVER go back to a 2.0. It's well worth the wait. Get the Eagle crank and the HD pistons.

You also have the budget for there work..

I think you made the right choice staying with a 2.0. Unless you are using a shop that is very used to building and tuning 2.3s such as English you get way more bang for your buck from a 2.0.

And just a word about Eagle I bought an Eagle crank for my 2.3 and guess what? Right out of the box the main journals measured out of spec and my machine shop refused to use it. Eagle did warranty it but it took four months as i ended up having to wait for the next shipment from China since the other three cranks they had in stock were not better then the one I sent back.

Sounds good. Do your homework on it though. I'd suggest starting here or the link ed1380 posted...

Eagle cranks are from China? Wow!! just get an oem crank.

Also I would have to disagree with the statement that strokers are harder to tune. Quite literally the only difference is crank and pistons. Well and displacement and torque.

Man what a headache! Really I just need a oem crank but everyone I've bought seems to be out of the motor for a reason. The Eagle crank I thought was my best option but after reading the reply on journals being out of spec, I'm AGAIN heading back to the board. My shop in town is pretty good but I dont know if they can balance everything, after seeing my last crank spin a rod i'm a little scared. I'm sure it was just the crank but this build is taking longer then expected. I want reliability and precision from the bottom up. I need to find a shop I can trust and a crank that can keep up.

Good stuff appreciate it

Most of the 2.3's i see end up with the pistons ovaled out.

Wow, that's a lot of side load. But with the stroke/rod ratio that's what you get.
What material is that piston? 4032 or 2618? and what was your sidewall clearance?

As many are nowadays. Their rods are from China also.

Not my engine, i only run 2.0's.ROFL The ptw clearance looked to have started at about .004", but of course now it's hard to tell, as the bore and piston are no longer round. It's out of a standard 100mm stroke, 150mm rod, and 6mm raised pin piston setup. Pretty much all of them end up looking like this.

I've been 2.3 for about 4 Years now and If your building a street car or a Race car its all positive. You can crank a hx-35 on the street and have the extra displacement to make HP for the track.

64 Crank
H-Beam Eagle rods
Wiseco HD Strokers
ACL race bearings
ARP everything.

I vote 2.3.

I've had my 2.3 since '06 and I love it! Great for a DD...good pull down low, which
makes for really nice for city driving. I personally like it much better than the 2.0..

I'd never go back to a 2.0 on a street car. They are very good overall motors, but I'd wouldn't use one again unless I was building something that is going to see alot of track time. My buddy has had his 2.3 for almost 8 years and it still runs awsome to this day, so quite frankly I'm not to concearned about it. As mentioned before... find another vendor to get your work done haha. I think you made the right choice though already having pistons for a 2.0.

2.3 maybe one day but for now 2.0 is the focus :thumb: So I get the Eagle crank then balance the rotating assembly. Is this an absolute must? Isn't alot of JE and Eagle weight matched. Also these motors are internally balanced motors right? If so do I just have my pistons rods and crank balanced? Also do I need to bring a shop my block. The cylinders have been honed .20 over.
