Well I have all the head bolts out and oil and coolent drained, and fuel rails detached, but I'm getting so over whelmed about all the vac hoses. I don't know what to do with all of them or know which ones I can take out. Also does the driver side engine mount hold the head on. Do I have to remove it to get the head off? I also don't know what I should leave plugged in and what to unplug on the intake.

If I can get rid of some of the vac's how do I do it and what are the cons?

I also loosen the exhust mainifold so I can't pry the head off by that so what do I do.

I'm beginning to think I should have found a running one, because this is very confusing and time consuming.

Should I just pull of all the vacs and worry about it later or what?

Also how long does a oil pump last?

Thanks Derek

Hey man, I was in the same situation as you a month ago when I had to pull my head. It's a great learning experience. Pull any vacumm lines you need to to get the head off. I usually labeled almost every bolt and line I could as I took them off and put them in ziplock bags. Take tons of pics to refer to when you put things back on.

You might need to remove the driver side motor mount to take it off. I think I did. I believe it was 2 bolts. There is also the bracket on the back of the head that holds the intake manifold to the head. The middle bolt is easy to get to from under the car. The rest are the biggest pain in the ass to do and it might take some time to get them off because space is so tight. Leave the intake manifold on as you pull the head; Just take off the exhaust manifold. Loosen the bolts that go to your turbo to the o2 housing, and then just pull up and down on it trying to wiggle it out. The reason it is so hard to get out is because there is a ring that goes between the exhaust manifold and the turbo. Dont forget to take the stud out that goes from the manifold to the turbo. You dont need to put it back in, so dont worry about stripping it with clamps or whatever you use to take it out. Get a rubber mallet after you have removed everything holding the head on. Just tap it lightly around the head to break/loosen the head off the block. It might take a bit to get off. After you get the ring off the exhaust manifold, you can put the manifold back on and use it for leverage to lift up on the head. You will need another person to help you lift it out. Head studs are just a 10mm allen with a rachet. I would recommend getting ARP head studs when you put it back and a Mitsu metal head gasket. You can get them from www.roadraceengineering.com for 95 for the head studs and 90 for the gasket. I would also recommend replacing all your tbelt stuff ( water pump, balance shaft belt, timing belt, tensioners etc.) Just do it right the first time. If you need help, feel free to AIM me or send me a PM.

Good Luck

Eric

just eliminate all of them...

I plan to get a new HG and ARP's. Does anyone know where I can get the upper gaskets, minus the HG because I want to get it seperate. I also need to get a new t-belt because mine slipped a tooth. I'm sure the valves are bent and I plan on ordering a new head from clear water out of flordia. I was going to check out a company in Il, or MI, but can't remember there name. A person on here works there and has helped me out before, but I can't find him.

Also if my car is a 1990-91 it has a 6 bolt right, and is it possible it has a Eprom. The oil pan has no indintation so it must be a 6 bolt.

I just hope I can get the head off. I just am worried about putting everything back on right and all the steps I still have to do

About the intake mainifold bracket. Is it different than the one right behind it because I can get to all those bolts pretty easily.

Thanks Derek

I used that link and is very helpful, but when I get to the part were I remove these it gets a little overwhelming Disconnect the CPS, TPS, ISC, IS,

TPS=throttle postion sensor
CPS=?
ISC=? or Idle screw controll
IS=?

And I have really no idea which ones are which

also why do you have to jack it up in order to remove the engine mount. Won't that crush my oil pan?

Thanks Derek

One more thing the engine mount is really the last thing holding my head on aside from the vac hoses?

thanks Derek

I'd invest in a factory service manual, or at least a haynes manual. I removed my head last week for the first time, and having the haynes helped alot with illustrations and diagrams. It will show you what is what on your car, but some of the methods described in the haynes are somewhat flakey from what I've heard from other members. If you can find a copy of the factory service manual, on cd or on paper, that would be a better help.

I have the same problem as you but I am way in over my head. When I bought my car the guy had already removed all vac. hoses so I have no idea what anything is. I have a factory service manual but it is very confusing.

That taboo speed site is VERY helpful I think. I don't understand what it means
"Plug the port of the evaporative canister hose on the turbo inlet hose after you remove the canister." I don't know what the canister is or looks like or which hoses they are talking about.
