i have a new ignition lock mechanism and i cant get the old one out.... it looks like there is a button you push a little metal one not the big black one and im pushing it, cant get the thing out for nothing,

does anyone know how to get it out or know where directions are on how to do this, there is not a manual at any of the shops around here and i cant afford to wait and order one...

this is my only car i need it to go to work so any info on how to get this out will be much appreciated, thanks

i moved this thread here after getting no replies in the newbie columb, desperatly looking for help, went and got a new key made at a dodge dealership, it works but takes forever to get it to work, still want to replace my ignition lock mechanism, please help

you have to turn the key to the acc to get the button to push up them pull on the key to remove it . if the key dosent move at all you can drill out the small button from the bottom then i will pull out

Mine did the same. When I finally got the assembly out, I took my dremel and cut off that locking tab that runs across the top of the lock assembly. For it was the rear part of the tab which wasn't releasing the assembly from the back-it had jammed in the "LOCK" position.

well i followed your advice and it turns out i just wasnt pushing the buttin in far enough... one i pushed it in far enough, it slid out like a glove.. it was all tacky and gunked up from 19 years of never being disassembled so i wd40d the shit out of it and now it works better than ever,, my problem now is i cant get it to go back in and now my key is a flat head screwdriver,,, it like the buttin is in the way even when engaged... should i shave the buttin down to nothing? because i dont see how the device will lock back in place once i get it in if i do that... for tonight the screwdriver is my key but depending on what you guys tell me i should do i might just eliminate the little metal button

you could always find an A\T ignition switch & use that... Us A\T guys don't even have the key release button... Any A\T DSM in the local parts yard will have it. If you decide to go that route, just be sure to grab the donor A\T car's lower steering colum cover at the same time (to cover the hole).

Also, Powdered Graphite lube works wonders on sticking key cylinders :thumb:

What you have to do is get the slot inside the assembly holder. which is connected to the actual ign switch in the same position as the tab on the back of the cylinder assembly.

You have to have the ign key inserted in the slot before you remount the assembly in the holder. This will hold up that external tab to allow the assembly to go fully into the holder.
