Whats beanch racing?

From the Urban Dictionary:

1. To discuss the possible quarter-mile elapsed time (E.T.) of a car based on a list of modifcations or horsepower estimate.
2. To discuss the estimated output (in horsepower) of one engine versus another based on lists of modifications done to each engine.
3. To discuss "which is faster?" or "Which would win in a race?" between two cars, based on 1 and 2 above.
Enough with the bench racing you stupid no0bs!

Sitting on a bench and talking, rather then actually playing the sport. Basically, to talk about how much horsepower you have or gained without putting it on a dyno OR to talk about how fast it will run in the 1/4 mile without actually going to the track.

The main point of iridium, IMHO, is that it wears much slower so you can go longer between plug changes(factory ~100k mile intervals). You can hold a finer point/edge longer, perhaps gaining a small and somewhat negligible gain in power. The gain would likely be caused by eliminating a slight misfire. They may also help with blowing out spark at high load since it is easier to arc across a point than a flat surface.

Any gains were from replacing worn parts. They are only labeled as performance parts because they cost more.

And that 3hp gain in that spark plug test falls well within a +/-5hp window that barely every makes it worth the trouble.

Were you talking about from that article the op posted? If so where do you get that the performance gain was from replacing worn parts? If I'm not mistaken it said it was a two month old spark plug. Before anybody jumps down my throat I'm not saying spark plugs would give insane amounts of hp or anything because I'm personally just sticking with the OEM ones. Besides I'm neutral :D on the subject just curious about the above statement is all.

Those were 2 separate comments.
Any gains the OP saw were from replacing old parts. There's no reason copper plugs, OEM wires in good condition, and the stock coil should have been under performing.

And the 3hp gained in the magazine's test was hardly worth the money.
For the 4g63: (prices from Rockauto.com, and similar to 420a plugs.)
NGK Copper: $1.51 ea.
NGK Iridium: $6.36 ea.

It's worth it for the mileage you'd get out of them on an N/T application, but I've been upping the boost and dropping heat ranges faster than every 100,000 miles on my car. ;)

You'd gain more horsepower from upping to premium gas and advancing the base timing a bit.

Philip, it's you who should find that article interesting, not us. We already know that spark plugs don't add power. The best part is how they sum it up at the end - "performance" spark plugs will only increase power if the OE plugs are not efficiently igniting fuel [the OE plugs are fouled or otherwise impeded in this scenario].

Or more easily summed up: Spark plugs do not add power.

EDIT: Damn I type slow

EDIT2: Is it easy to increase base timing on an NT?

I have also never had a 420a..I guess I'm spoiled like that..

Although I did see one 20 min away with under 100k for like 1500$..I thought about buying it..

Ah Gotcha.

Yea Idk this would be a bit ambiguous assuming the same results can be achieved from the 420a (3hp) and assuming the Op wanted to stay N/A. Especially since according to this article:

Mitsubishi Eclipse RS - Report - Import Tuner Magazine

They spent $1200 to gain 1.2hp more LOL.

Agreed

If I'm thinking correctly, the CAS on a 97+(or any 2g cas) is purely for phasing the fuel events. The crank position sensor dictates the exact timing event.

I thought the '97+ had a single CAS unit just like the 1gs?

97+ cars do have a cam angle sensor in the location as the 1g, it is not adjustable though. They also have a crank sensor though. The original poster is talking about a 420a however.
