i wanna paint my valve cover, but im curious... if i take off my valve cover, do i have to change the gasket underneath? if so, are they expensive? i thought i remembered them being a ton of money.

You'll wish you had - An Oily mess running down the Block kinda knocks the fizz off of a freshly painted Valve Cover - Don't forget the Spark Plug Gaskets too - They are sold seperately - Torque is 24 to 36 INCH Pounds & you have to go over them a dozen times or so to get them evenly snugged.

the reason i ask is because i just got new lifters installed and i believe they changed the gasket at the same time. its like 600 miles old.

Change it. If you don't and it leaks, your gonna have to take it off again and take another chance at cracking the valve cover when you put it back on, which happens very easily.

frick. well, should i get one from the dealer, or should i get one from like autoparts store? which is cheaper / better?

I doubt they are gonna be any different. Just get one from a parts store.

What method (link or something) did you use to change the lifters? I only know of one link somewhere of vfaq that I have printed out regarding changing/cleaning lifters, just wondering if there was something else better/more detailed/etc....?

I have some on the way that will soon get rid of that damn tick...and I'm going to change the gasket too...

Thanks.

they were covered under warranty because i got the wonderful extended warranty for my car when i bought it. they ordered my lifters and installed them, free of charge, and the job was orignally quoted to me at 900$. so im not really the person to ask about that.

Then it should be fine.
Just when you pull off the valve cover physically inspect the gasket and make sure it still looks good and if it does then just re-use it.
