Hey guys i need to buy a new tranny and they keep asking what spline my 90 gsx awd 5spd is?...

1..is there a way to tell without removing tranny

2..if i bought a tranny and the transfer case that went with that tranny does the spline count still matter.

3..or should i give up and swap to a fwd tranny?

thanks
josh

not sure i would try posting this in the tech form also you may get more assestince there

you can remove the drive shft and count the splines, and if you got a new tranny and tcase; if the splines are different then the drive shaft wont slide into the tcase, stay awd its awesome while others are spinning you'll be winning. :)

If the transfer case, if it's all steel it is a 23 spline output shaft. If it's aluminum it is a 22 spline output shaft. Your 92 is a 23 spline output.

is this true?....that sounds so much easier the removing the tranny...how about the steel verse aluminun transfer case one being 23 spline the other being 22 spline..

If its a stock 90, you will have a 22 spline. If you were to get a 23, the tcase would not go in to the tranny. The driveshaft doesn't matter. The splines on all the 1g were the same.

And yes, what i said about what its made up of it FACT.

James :laser::talon:

It most likely is a 22 spline unless its already been changed. Stay with a 22 spline because there is a lot you have to change to convert to a 91 through 94 23 spline on a 90 gsx. Your best bet is if you can find a 22 spline tranny and t-case. As stated above the drive shaft splines do not matter.

I thought all you have to change is the output shaft on the tranny and the input shaft on the tcase? And i know for a fact changing them isnt hard, besides having to take the tranny out.

James :laser::talon:

Yes you can switch the shafts but if you don't go into the tranny and do that, then to put a 91-94 tranny and t-case into a 90 you need to switch the shifter base, cables and the arms on the tranny. its easier to put a 90 tranny and t-case in a 91-94. You need to do this to make sure it works right.
Here's another way to see what tranny is in your car but it doesn't guarantee that the shafts haven't been switched but it will give you a better start.
I borrowed this list from TOTAL PERFORMANCE

I've called all over the US and Canada looking for a specific trans and needed the numbers to identify them. Here they are for your viewing pleasure.

I hope this helps someone else out.

Yes they all do. I just posted this because it helped me realize that I have a 91-94 tranny and t-case in my 90 GSX. The tranny and everything had already been swapped out. My transfer case went out and I was wanting to get the right one although I found a great deal on a shep stage 3 tranny with transfer case 22 spline that I'm putting into my car as we speak. I searched for a while to try and figure it out before i pulled the t-case. The best tool on here is to search the forums because most of the questions just like the op had posted are already answered.
And yes as stated from VETTE 50 TH, if your t-case is aluminum, it is a 22 spline and if it is steel, it is a 23 spline.

Ok. Thats what i thought. Nice find for the Shep tranny. So many people seem to spend thousands of dollars on trannys but never out them in, or sell them after a few months.

Whats up with that? :confused:

I know what you mean. I actually bought it from a guy that only put about 500 miles on it then spun a rod bearing in his 2g so he needed the money to redo that and had already parted out the 1g and had this laying around in hopes of another one down the road. I got the tranny with 4 spyder center, t-case, scatter shield, and a brand new 23 spline shaft for an extra athough i'm sticking with the 22 spline that is in it. Got a great price less then half of what he paid just for the tranny.:D

Wow. Cool. I wish i could find a cheap brand new one. I hate used stuff. :p

But to the OP. The best and really only way to tell for sure is to pull the transfer case. Its actually not that hard. If you have any other questions PLEASE use the search. There is a lot of info out there on all this stuff. Stay with AWD though cus it a lot of fun. If I were you though i would buy a 90 tranny and transfer case to save you more work. Good luck.

thank you very much...shepards stage one tranny is 945 i'll stick with that one. i only have enough money to buy 1 tranny so i'm scared to get a cheaper used one just incase it has problems.

again thank you guys
