PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

although not on DSMs, i've been in cars that were equipped with either the GT30R or the GT35R.. 1 was a built s2000 pushing 512 rwhp @ 18 psi and one on a turbo mr2. both turbos are INSANE.

anyway,
having a 500 whp street driven vehicle is a pretty hard task to accomplish but can be done with any of those turbos. well maybe not a 50 trim [but dont tell dre that :shhh:  ]. also, I'd look into building your block before pushing 25+ psi with a bigger turbo. at the least get pistons/rods.

good luck, and I hope this isn't a daily driver :p

He said he's got 2g pistons and 1g shotpeened rods... anyways, I'd go with the gt's if you can, otherwise somethign with the 60 trim wheel, it's a good hi-power wheel.

Lew, are you talking about the bolt on style GT turbos from precision or the garrett flanged GT's? You already know how I feel about the SCM61 from our discussion on the local board. I love it. It works, its affordable and when you get your built setup done you will have plenty of room to grow because its definately capable of more than 500hp. Also realize that the SCM61 is still a GT based turbo. The compressor is a GT40 56 trim so your still getting the new garrett aerodynamics just not the BB center section.

I dont think the bolt on 50 trim is a good idea since you are doing a built motor later and will definately be wanting to push over 500whp. Once you start making power, you just want more. :D

Now, if you are wanting a garrett flanged turbo that you can run with an aftermarket garrett style manifold then I like the GT35R. But there will be additional costs associated with this turbo like the manifold and external wastegate.

The reason I even consider the gt30r is cuz I have pretty much given up on this racing season. I'm taking my time now so $ isnt AS big an issue. I'm liking the gt32 cuz I get it and a header for the $ of the scm61, dont know what flange but it shouldnt matter cuz of the custom header right?. Narrowed down, between the scm61 and the gt32w/header what would you guys pick?

What hot side is the GT30R coming with? From Garrett they are only available with either an .82AR or a huge 1.06. For you, I would say a .63AR would be best for what you are trying to do. The compressor is smaller that the SCM61 as well. The 61 uses a 65lb compressor whereas a GT30R is a 55lb compressor. Then there is still the price of the wastegate plus the cost of fabbing up a garrett style 02 housing to work with your downpipe. Then again though, you can jsut do what Bus and I did on his T66 and build an integrated 02/downpipe setup and sell your downpipe to cover the cost.

gt30r
Wheel: 60mm w/ 84 trim

-Housing: .48 or .63 ar

Compressor

-Wheel: 76.2mm w/ 56 trim

-Housing: .60 ar

seems like I should go with the 61 w/spray and the gt30 w/o spray. am I on the right track? I'm getting the gt30r for sure if its cheap enough..>900

You're really going to have to be tuned to the bleeding edge to get 500bhp out of the 30R. You would have to be Dre to get 500 at the wheels with a 30R. The wheel is just too damn small. The 61 will do it without breaking a sweat because it a much larger wheel. A 30R with sauce is going to be more like a 61 without.

What header/manifold are you going to run and what wastegate? Are you planning in running an internal or external if you get the SCM61? Either way you look at it, the 32 still isnt going to be capable of making the power that the 61 does in the end. With both turbos you are getting GT wheels and the 32 is the smaller of the 2. Neither of them will be ball bearing at that price so throw that out the window.

The 32 is only capable of supporting 520 at the crank whereas the 61 is good for 630 at the crank. I have personally seen the SC61 compressor make over 620whp paired with a P trim trubine in a full T4 application.

Here is the GT32 compressor map. http://www.atpturbo.com/root/maps/gt32.htm Looks a tad weak to me for making 500whp. Above about 42lbs per min the 32 is not even on the map anymore. It is operating way out of its efficiency range. And if you can make 500whp on that compressor I'll vote for you for president.

On the other hand, here is the GT40 56 trim (SCM61) compressor map http://not2fast.wryday.com/turbo/maps/gt40-56trim.jpg flowing nicely even out at 60lbs per min. If you look back at about 40-45 lbs per min on this map, this compressor is at 78-79% efficiency and is really just getting into happy land, whereas the 32 would be meeting its end.

I know that compressor maps arent the be all end all of turbo selection, but this should definately help with the decision. You can also go back and look at the DSM Times list and see how many people are running fast on a GT32. . . its a short list although there are a few. Then look at the number of GT40 56T compressors. Note that the FP 3065 is the GT 40 56T and the AGP RS65, AGP GT 40, GT3040 is the same as well. They all use the same compressor as the SCM61.

the gt32 has an internal wastegate, and the header was gonna be a "custom" by polk. as well as the o2/dump housing. I dont want to drag this out so I've reached a decision....gt40
Garrett GT40 Turbo
Compressor 82mm, 50 trim, .58 A/R
Turbine 77mm, 73 trim, .94 A/R $607.50

with header and external wastegate.. Was this the gt40 you were talking about?
