This is the first whole day my friend has owned the car and I think it has crankwalk. It was perfectly fine last night...ran like a champ. Here is what happened:

He said he drove to his friends house, when he got there he pushed in the clutch and the car died
Everytime he came to a stop and was in 1st gear and pushed in the clutch the car died
Driving down the highway, all of the sudden the car started to overheat and when they pulled up an onramp the car died
There was smoke coming from under the hood
They said the coolant was boiling
The car will not turn over, We tried and it started clanging really bad
It is leaking oil, from where we dont know yet
Driving down the highway he said he lost all power, it wouldnt go over 70

At first I thought maybe the thermostat got stuck and the engine overheated and warped the head but since it wont start up and is making that weird banging/clanking sound in the engine Im not so sure...please help me to diagnose the problem. It was running fine last night.

Oh, he paid $1800 for it 95 TSI AWD with 134K miles. He didnt even know it was AWD till I told him today.

It wasn't crankwalk to begin with, the car dying when pressing in the clutch could have been something as small as a vacuum leak. As for the car overheating, how long was he driving it while hot? The block could be cracked.
As for the engine not cranking and making all that noise, it sounds f'd, plus the car has 134k on the clock, he should just keep his eye out for a nice 6 bolt, or contact the previous owner.

he bought the car last night...also, the car ran perfect when I went for a ride in it.

I talked to the people that he bought it from and they said they drive it 100 miles a day and it makes monthly trips to mexico...

At least he only paid 1800 for a 2g awd. Now he can rebuild it for 2 grand.
1800 + 2000 = $3800 Not bad, I think...

yeah that is a really good deal IMO i wouldnt worry about it, i'd be more pissed it if i bought the car for 4 grand and needed to rebuild. :thumbdown

Yeah its not crankwalk. The best way to tell you have crankwalk is when you push down on the clutch (especially while going around a left hand turn) the clutch stay there. This is because the crank slides down and hits the flywheel. I'd aggre the engine is prolly screwed. It might be for the best though to get it rebuild with less miles and have it be more reliable. :) :dsm:

Don't forget to harvest all you can from the 7 bolt before you scrap it though. At least they are good for a few things...

O, I just can't think of any facet of that that isn't plain scary.
