Hey guys, I decided to port this 14B that I am going to be putting on soon. I bought it with about 60K on it. Let me know what you guys think and if there is anything else i should do with it.

What's the wastegate passage look like? You should smooth everything out with a sanding drum or flapper wheel. Looks a little wavy instead of smooth.

I didnt touch the wastegate passage, there are 2 cracks around the hole where the flapper is supposed to seal and i really didnt feel like messing with it. I saw the write up on the porting of this turbo and they make the area of the wastegate passage bigger, but is this for a stock gasket or do i need to order like an Evo III gasket for it if i do that?

Also, what should I use to sand it or smooth it out nicely? I used a wire wheel to try to polish it and it definitely smoothed it but its still wavy. I guess i need to use the porting bit again on it and just do a more thorough job on it.

Like I said, use a sanding drum or flapper wheel to smooth it.

I didn't mean just the passage, the whole opening can be made to be more like a "bell" shape. Take a look at the porting page on www.vfaq.com for more info on that. You should do your O2 housing and get a different gasket for it.

It's better to do it right once, than have to pull it out and do it again.

Do you know how any of this is going to help me? I know most people port their 14B to eliminate boost creep, but I have never had a problem with that. I run 19 psi on my 14B now, will I notice any power gains over that on a 14B that is ported?

The actual neck of the turbo is very bumpy as i see it from those pics. You have more material to take off.

Ok, you guys have convinced me to have at it again. I didn't have enough time to do it so i was rushing a bit so next time i will really be able to take my time with it. Porting is pretty fun.. i can see myself going around looking for other things to port very soon.

That's how I felt after I ported my 14b and O2 housing. If you have the right tools, it can be a lot of fun, but I can imagine doing it with a Dremel might become a bit of a chore. :)

There's definitely more material you can take off. It should look smooth when all said and done.

Here's an example:

Yes, your defently to "bumpy" & you can remove more material so the step in the inlet is completely gone. Here's a pic of my porting, done with carbide bits, then sanding drums & finished off with a flapper wheel.

Not sure why yours came out so bumpy. Did you keep the tool moving back and forth or did you keep it in one are at a time?

Damn, that looks nice! I guess I have a lot more work to do. I think the reason its so bumpy is that I didnt spend enough time on it.

Ill do some more and post back with some pics.

What is a good grit flapper wheel to get for the finishing polish?
