Last friday night i took my gst to the dragstrip, and i was hoping to run atleast 9.6 1/8 mile. My first pass was a 10.6 because i was spinning really bad and missed second. Second pass i almost killed it off the line but didn't miss second and it wasn't spinning and i only ran a 10.2.(last week i ran a 10.1 and my car would not tach past 5k cause of a short in the coil packs) So the next pass i was gonna try and take off a little harder, My car started to spin, so i let off of the gas and then gassed it again and BOOM!!!! POP!!!! RATTLE!!!!CRACK!!!! After i got it off the track, trans fluid was leaking out. I havent taken it apart yet but im pretty sure that the transmissions insides are busted and it busted the case like my other transmission. Would the Jacks or sheppards transmissions be worth $2300 or should i just sell my gst and buy and srt-4 or something else, cause i know if i keep it as much bad luck as i have my motor will crankwalk.

Correct me if I'm wrong but even if you had an SRT-4 I don't think a stock tranny will last long when you launching it really hard at the strip

Get a dogbox transmission then if you're gonna drag for high numbers. Stock trannies aren't made for runs like that

I looked and they dont have them for a gst

probably not, but i was only tachin it to 1,500 rpms and the time it broke maybe 2k. All i know is my cousins bone stock srt-4 ran a 9.6 three passes in a row. Im not wanting to race every weekend just every now and then.

How much power can the stock trans take in good condition?

it cant be much

I don't think that any car of any make, options, et.al., can make that big of difference, but it's all about how the driver is in charge of the situation in hand.

I'm sure that your cousin is using shifting techniques to make the tranny work with the motor as a one combined unit, just that the "Skittle" SRT-4 is working for him (also, the SRT-4 is geared and built for Rally Road Racing and not for straight line Drag as our DSM's are .. that in itself can be a big difference...be interesting how he would do against someone with a Subaru WRX-STi being that vehicle is in the same rally race class as the Dodge) and he knows how to handle it very well in his runs.

Maybe, you ought to ask him on what techniques he is using and have him teach you how it's done since he's showing that he can be successful in operating a stock tranny in racing conditions with no problems.

Good luck - DSM

Idk what to do,its my differential that is broke, and i guy told me that the quaife lsd will hold up but will cause other parts to break. He said that id be better off doing away with lsd, and go to single traction. If i do that im gonna spin across the finish line again. Would i be better off getting another transmission or are the jacks, dogbox, shep transmissions really worth all that money. They want an extra $800 for the core charge of another transmission (my case is busted) not counting the $2-3000 dollars for having it built.

here is my video of breaking transmission.

Stop doing burnouts. Pegleg burnouts will kill the front diff everytime. How many have you broken like that?

Get a Quaife, it won't break. Once you have a Quaife the next weak link in your drivetrain is wheelhop. Wheelhop will break the gears if it happens long enough or hard enough.

Drive smart, don't just stand on the gas pedal an let it spin and hop to death. It's FWD, you have to finess it.

When i bought the car, the dude didnt tell me the transmission had problems. After the 3rd or 4th month of owning the car i realized that the case was cracked, and when the clutch went out, i saw that something had been shot through the side of the bellhousing of the tranmsission, so i bought another transmission and changed it all out put a new stage 3 zoom in there and ripped it out 3 weeks ago. how would i stop wheelohop if i get a lsd?

Getting prothane motor mount inserts and getting the whole fron end stiff (suspension, all poly bushings etc). Wheel hop is a killer gotta get that to stop. You can run a awe trans in your fwd. Weld the center diff and your good to go.

Your gonna have problems with the 5spds...but if you keep the car tight and learn little tricks that the Honda guys use it will help.

You guys need to stop trying to do burn outs at the track. The one video shown of the gst broke the trany before he even got to the line. Go around the water then stage the car. Keep the car out of wheel hop as thats were the damage is done.
The burn outs are done on cars with full slicks and built drive lines.

im seriously considering ordering a transmission from advance auto for $1500 because it comes with a 3 year warranty. I could probably leave it single traction and get some 200 treadwear nittos, but idk it spun awful with the lsd insert and 380 treadwear tires. also I have solid welded transmission mounts, are they bad about causing transmissions to break?

Poly bushings, Poly motor mounts, Tokico illuminas, Megan springs, Camber adjusted, No LSD, just a LSD block from Slowboy racing, and a pair of Hoosier street radials on stock trans has served me well, I have had no problems running 350hp on that set-up, and I have an ACT2600 with Exedy full faced disk. When I launch, I am on slipping the clutch till 3rd gear. Yes I have gone through 2 disks...But those are cheaper than 2 Transmissions.

A. Stop wheel hopping your car.
B. Stop doing the burnouts unless you have some sort of slicks, and a decent tranny.

Otherwise, like its been said, Your clutch is a fuse, burn it up, replace it, instead of the whole harness. Get it?!

i kill 3 transmission on my gst, last tranny i rebuilt for my self with insert LSD and evo gears with 5th gear from gsx now work perfect last 3 never pass 4K miles.
u can rebuilt yours with parts from doxbox or different vendor and save $$$$ easy job.

If you like to rebuild your own trans, or at least replace the broken diff, go to TeamRip.com Garage sale page and get a new front diff and install it yourself. A good used diff is much cheaper than a whole trans.

Yeah, I'd rather have sticky tires than a cheap lsd insert.

i had a tranny professionaly rebuilt from a very reputable local shop, cost me 1500. I was in the 350+hp range and had poly mounts installed all the way around first thing you need to learn is get a good clutch and learn to slip it. learn your perticular car. all DSMs are not the same even stock. I have driven several and every one launched differently. burnout boxes are for slicks only not radials keep burning that expensive tread for nothing. also radials get greasy feeling after burnouts they dont get better traction when hot like slicks do. as said above go around the box. also you can always do a AWD swap its not to hard. or get a GSX. I have a FWD tranny i no longer need since i am doing the AWD swap in my spyder so if you need it PM and im sure we can work something out.

i took my transmission apart and almost everything inside was broke:cry: I was looking to get the stage 3 build from teamrip but they have to have your transmission case that is in good shape....and mine is BAD. do yall think that this build is worth 2 grand? i mean i only paid $4500 for my car

It's probably not worth it unless you really love the car. Also keep in mind that the stage 3 trans would be an upgrade, which is supposed to cost a little more. I'm sure you could find someone selling a used trans at a cheaper price if you just wanted to get it running again.

Is that the only hole in the case? If so, I'd just weld it closed and buy new/upgraded internals. I blew my front diff many years ago and the front diff pieces cut a groove in the same area as yours. I had it welded and filled in, it's held up fine ever since.

Dude you're just driving it wrong. A stock transmission can hold up to much faster passes than that if you work the clutch properly. I've done several 8.5 second 1/8th mile passes on stock transmissions, and that stuff never happens to me.

i think you should just another stock xnsm but drive it right,

i have stock xnsm, and i did 8.405 @ 1/8th (before build) now in the process of finishing odds n ends.

but yall are awd right?

I swear the first pass i did dump the clutch but the other times i almost killed the car i took off so easy it just starts to spin and hops and then it broke, it probably was the burnout that caused it to break. idk Im still argueing with myself, get a stage 2 or 3 transmission so when i get my motor built it will handle it or just sell my car and either get a gsx or even get out of the dsm scene.
