OK this happend a few months ago but I never got around to posting about it! I have a 1.6 in my 91 GSX I had a good buddy of mine do my timing belt and the timing belt didn't fit so we went on a hour long journey to different part stores looking for the 2.0 timing belt all were bigger than the one I had!! Strange!!! Well on our way to Napa he says "oh shit, I think you have a 1.6 from a mirage!" I was like ####! sure enough we got to NAPA and ask for a 1.6 it was a perfect match! So we head home and look the head is stamped 1.8 and the spot on the front of the block where it should be stamped is all scratched up!!! :)mad: the guy who sold me the car is a a44 hole!) So I'm fubared but for now I'm gonna run the 1.6 and she how much power she puts out in the car and after Christmas I swapping in the 2.0! Just thought people would get a kick out of it well Thanks for the space! Later!

That's actually pretty damned funny... usually people with the 1.6L Mirages swap to the 2.0L 4g63t for the added power it provides. Maybe they bought that car, and just swapped the engines so they could sell off the one you bought. Only other reason I can imagine is that possibly they blew their 2.0L, and a 1.6L *is* cheaper from a lot of rebuild houses.

You'll want to check your ECU and see if you still have the 2.0L unit, or if they swapped that out as well. Not sure about any wiring harness differences either.

Congrats on the oddball.. you definitely have one of the more unique DSMs on the road. :thumb:

They do look pretty similar, actually. It'd be an easy mistake to make for someone who didn't look under a DSM hood every day. Note the Mirage in the background of my sig. :)

weren't the mirages used as the basis of the older lancer evolutions?

thats funny...a 1.6L GSX. haha, consider yourself lucky. :thumb:

Yea, LOL, maybe you will have better luck with that engin not giving you a different problem every month

Yes, Mirages were built on the same frame. Why you can drop in an Evo III engine and tranny, so long as you're willing to swap the floor panels and gas tank to deal with the driveshaft and rear diff. And at over a thousand pounds lighter... it can be a *quick* little car.

Mine's waiting until I can track down the 1.6L motor and tranny mounts, and a working '90 4g63t longblock and ECU within my price range. Already have the engine wiring harness sitting in a box, and that's the tough one to find. :thumb:

The 1.6 ,1.8,2.0,and 2.4 if DOHC all at a glance, look the same.Save the head,it'll raise your compression about 3/4 of a point on a turbo 2.0.Ports and valves are the same size.I've done this 6 or 7 times and you feel the same kick like you would wiyh 2g pistons.Hey guy looking for mirage mounts I beleive Hyundai Elantra around 92 94 j code 8th letter of the vin has your mounts. They're a little more plentiful in junkyards.

Yeah when I drove it it had loads of problems vacume lines were all ran rong no vacum hooked up to the wastegate and after that was all fixed I noticed my small 16 didnt hit 10psi till around 4200rpm I was like WTF?? Me and a few other guys on my bored SDDSM.org couldnt figure it out Thenthe timing belt and it all made sense, LOL LOL

Thats funny
hey look at it like this...
at least you get better gas mileage (I hope)

Do you have any pics of the car?
Im just curious to see!

Thanks

When you pop the hood it'll look just like a 2.0 engine. You have to really dig around and look for the engine code on the bock behind the water pipe to see what engine it is. I think this is the second time somebody's posted about having a DSM that had a 1.6 swapped in there.

Hey... Thas a funny subject. I recently bought a couple dsms and had a motor thrown in.. I was told it was a 2.0... However the block is stamped as others mentioned behind the water pipe as a 4g61 not a 4g63... However I was informed that people use the 1.6 Crank since its lighter and it changes the stroke?

Yeah most people who do use the 1.6 crank put it in a 2.4 block and get a 2.1 roughly and that thing revs like whao!! But is totally not good for a street daily car! very cool idea though! I am waiting to find out if I have a 4g63 or the 4g67 if I have the 67 I am gonna throw the head on my 2.0 and raise the compression, pretty sweet! I just am not sure the block code by the water pipe is all scratched up but the head is stamped 18?? Any ideas?

Im pretty sure that is what SBR uses but I just have never heard anything but problems you get very little low end power and torque, it's all topend not good in my opinion for a street/Daily!

Ya I Dont know how it performs but it would be definately be a high rever and somthing different. I Know the Crank Is alot lighter.. I would have 2 say that if it wasnt for the 1.6 the 2.0 wouldnt of been born. so hands up for that lil hummer. Happy Boosting.

might wanna check the block for the engine code next time. ROFL

sorry but I deg gotta laugh on that one. I cant blame you tho, I dont think I woulda noticed either. Sucks.

Time for a 2.0 stroker.

The 1.8 head / engine comes in Hyundai Elantras. It is the same head as the 1.6 but they mark it 1.8 because it uses different cams. You should use your turbo cams. But if they are the 1.8 Hyundai cams, they're an upgrade over stock 2.0 turbo cams.If you look at the very top of the block just below the CAS you'll find the vin # if the first letter is a K and the 8th letter an M , then you have a 1.8 Hyundai.

why isnt the 1.6 crank on a 2.4 streetable? is that what sbr's destroked kit is?

The post above this is wrong, as is this one.

2.1's are 4G64's with 4G63 cranks and customer longer rods. It does rev to the moon without so much as a whimper, which is more than our shitbox trannies can say.
