i cant figure out what year my motor is??

alright so i pulled a motor from a junk yard for my build and i cant figure out what year it is. during the install my parts must of got mixed up because my motor mount plate says 97 but my thermostat housing says 96. I have had two 97 and a 96 so its possible I mixed them up. The numbers i got off the other side of the head was 4667867 s73 j 1f and i couldnt find anything online to reference off of those numbers. Is there a place to call or look up to find this out? Im trying to order a new ecu and i want to make sure its the right year. I know my transmission is out of my 97 but I didnt use the block or head. Is there another way to tell what year it might be? I have looked around for two days and cant figure this out.

If I'm not mistaken 95-99 is the same as long as it 4g63. At least everytime I order parts it only gives 1g or 2g option, 2g always listed as 95-99

As far as the motor goes for what year...it's not that big of a deal. What you really need to look at is the wiring harness you are using that is currently in the car. A way that I have checked is to look at the Coil packs plug on the harness and see if it has round pins or flat pins.

So...if the plug has round pins it's most likely a 95 or 96 harness. 97 and up are flat pin. This also applies to the crankshaft position sensor (CPS or CAS). Same style pins 95/96 vs. 97+.

Once you've verified these, you can determine which ECU you need to buy. Make sure you get one that corresponds with your transmission as well.

well this might be a tuff one. i know for sure the harness is a 96 since i havn't messed with the harness just the motor. i know that my transmission is a 97 too so will i still be able to have the af/x work for my car that way?

If you have a 96 harness in the car, then you're going to need a 96 ECU. The ECU pinouts are different between the 96 and 97 to 99. A 97 af/x ECU will not work in a chassis with a 96 harness.

You still need to verify if all the plugs on the harness accept the current sensors on your motor. If it does not, upgrade accordingly to match. Refer to my previous post for that information.

Um, you're mistaken. We're talking 420a. And I would suggest not guessing based on ordering parts for your car. You might want to look up the 4G63 engine.

OP, I'm a little confused on wether or not you still have your original engine, but if you do, use the sensors from that and bolt them onto your 97 engine. As Cas pointed out, you need to get the ECU for your car (or if the wire harness has been switched somehow, follow the harness) not the engine.

I was wondering the same thing myself. Years ago...when I swapped my 96 motor to the 97 chassis, I grabbed the crank sensor from the 97 block that was shot and put that in the 96 block and I was good to go. So that should help him on his way I hope.

I do still have the stock motor that I pulled out of my 96 but the motor I built was from a junk yard car. I put a 97 transmission in the 96 car with my built motor. I just didn't know what year ecu I need to get, a 96 or 97 with manual transmission. My car still bounces off 4000 rpm while driving and my map sensor checked out to be fine. Im hoping this af/x ecu will fix my problem.

Regardless of what year block/head/manual transmission you have, they are not going to affect the year the ECU requires. Those are mechanical items. It's based off the wiring harness that's in the car. You said that was a 96, so you need a 96 MTX ECU then.
